Any chance that I can plug in external microphones and use the on-board algorithms on a UMA board?

Sure, you indeed can. That's what the UMA16 is for. www.minidsp.com/products/usb-audio-inter...-16-microphone-array
Note however that you must use you own beamforming algorithm in that case as the UMA16 doesn't have any DSP/beamforming. It's raw audio of all your external mics.
