Why not use Convolution Filters running in Roon?  Not sure what the difference would be between miniDSP/DiracLive and custom filters on Roon.  I here experts can configure even Bacch-SP type crosstalk correction as well....

I believe my first step is to purchase a UMIK-1 and measure the room in something like REW to see what the graphs look like

It is a small room.

What is? The large open plan living space shown in the picture above certainly isn't.

The diagram showed a much larger open plan area. Are you referring to what is in the diagram or something else?

Yes, I saw the diagram.  Listen space and a kitchen in the back. There is Dining room , but is not part of the living room.  Ok, lets call it a medium Room. Anyway 4 subs will help a lot!

Its an open space floor plan... almost 1000 square foot space overall, 25ft x 45ft.  The listening area is 20ft x 25ft.

Sound waves won't care where somebody defines a kitchen to start, or to the other spaces to the side of the kitchen, or indeed the stairs to other floors. The sound waves will see a very large volume indeed, which on the plus side means that significant standing wave resonance issues are unlikely but on the negative side will mean that the demands placed on any subs will be increased.
