Hello, I am calling on people who use SHD as a DLNA player (renderer) streaming from  JRiver Media Center.
The problem I am having is that miniDsp IR remote does not control Play/Pause/Next functionality in this case. Volume Up/Down buttons work but not the stream controls.
While playing from a Roon core to a Roon end point on SHD the remote works fine, so I assume it's not the hardware issue. I contacted the support team but they couldn't help. They cannot reproduce the problem, apparently such a setup is working for them.

I tried streaming to a different player (Sony TV) and its remote worked fine to control the playback. So I figured my JRiver MC config is not unreasonable.

My setup details:
SHD, Ethernet cable connected to the LAN; Firmware Rev 1.15 /FW1.29
miniDsp IR remote control v2
Volumio v1.118
JRIver MC v.28.0.105  running on Windows10 on the same LAN, controlled by either it's native UI or JRemote app on an iPad. (No problem controlling the streaming from those)

Does anybody have such a setup and can (or cannot) use the IR remote to control the stream (Play/pause/Next)?
Thank you in advance for any help you might have !

I just checked. I have both V1 and V2. V1 did not have play/pause/back/next, so when V2 came out, I bought one.

The play/pause/back/next has never worked for me, except with Volumio. Having said that, my next button does work for some reason. I have both JRemote and Audirvana Remote on an iPad and JRiver 20 and Audirvana Studio on a mac mini server. Volumio is only for setting up DLNA, so that both programs can function.

So, I can confirm that the V2 Remote does not work with either JRemote and Audirvana Remote. (It doesn't bother me as I always use the controls on my iPad.) The other buttons work as expected.

As I received a follow-up from the support team, I am copying it here below for those who may be looking for the same.
In short, the answer is that the use case is not supported due to DLNA limitation. It's a pity since I really love to have a one button click pause/play when interrupted. I guess to have this supported we'd need a Volumio plugin communicating with JRiver on a more intimate terms than generic DLNA.

From: miniDsp TechSupport>>>    "OK, we now have the reason why it's not working. It's the way you're using Jriver/miniDSP SHD as an hybrid system. Under DLNA, there are 2 concept. A renderer (i.e. outputs audio) and a controller/browser. The SHD can indeed do both and that's why you can have - SHD as a controller streaming from Jriver DLNA source of files. i.e. file on the Jriver side. - Jriver controller streamer to SHD as a rendererWhen you're doing this " I just start the playback from JRiver MC UI or JRemote app on iPad. Then I press Pause/Play on the remote and nothing happens. " You're basically starting in one mode and switching to another. It won't be possible I'm afraid. If you decide to use the ipad as your own control interface .Keep using it. If you start using say Volumio WebGUI as your controller, you will see that it works perfectly fine to use the remote. That's because Volumio is the controller in this case. There is no scenario/ability to use both modes as you're intending here as per DLNA protocol limitation.. It sounds like you already have a great way to control Jriver by either the GUi or Jremote app. Just stick with it is easiest I guess. " <<<

I sort of expected this reply. DLNA is fraught with issues such as these. I'm just grateful that alternatives such as JRemote and AudirvanaRemote work at all with the SHD. Volumio is just not for me, but it does function as intended with the IR remote.

I was also half-expected that when I first raised the question, but when I was told that "everything is working fine over here" my hopes were somewhat elevated. Apparently they just didn't read the issue carefully enough. Anyway, it's not the end of the world, although a nuisance for sure.
