You are lucky. I really find the Dial interesting, but my SHDStudio is not the latest hardware version.

So I do not have any further idea, other than retrying it often enough or asking the support. But the support for the Dial probably still is beta?

I don't know if you ever contacted support, but I had the same issue and was told that the plugin was coming soon but was not yet available. I'm waiting for this as well since I bought a surface dial just for it and don't want to pay for roodial just yet so I was disappointed it wasn't available to try out. I'm guessing the minidsp team is making sure everything is stable before release but we will have to wait.

Yes, I got the same answer. Let's wait and see. The volume control of the SHD is over the app not usabel. I hope with the Dial it will be more usable in the livingroom. Cheers...

Why does the Dial only work on the latest SHD? I thought the new streamer hardware had no additional functionalities?

Good news is that that v1.118 will shortly become available together with the beta test for the MS Dial.
www.minidsp.com/forum/announcements/1982...or-shd-series-v1-118

Warning that this feature is BETA even after all the QC testing. We're extremely clear about it everywhere but just want to make sure that there is no confusion.. :-)
Here is the app note for steps: www.minidsp.com/applications/advanced-tools/shd-microsoft-dial

Some of you having issues with step size on Volumio GUI should be happy as well.. ;-)

Have fun

I have the Studio Neo3 version and I managed to upgrade to Volumio v1.118 today and have followed the instructions to set up the dial, but Volumio is stating there is no Bluetooth Adaptor to access.

I have tried powering off and on and removing the EDUP adaptor, but to no avail.

I also plugged the EDUP into my pc to make sure it wasn’t faulty and when I do so there is a bright flashing blue led. There is no led when plugged into the back of the Studio.

Anyone else had the problem or found a solution?

I am in contact with Support and will provide an update if I make progress.

I was able to download the update, then restarted the Volumio again before plugging in the EDUP adapter. I followed the other instructors for changing the step size and then connected the surface dial using the gui without issues.

Control is a little finicky with the surface dial, and the step size sometimes changes by 1.5 even though the step size is set to one, but it's pretty much what I expected. The surface dial really needs something glass or metal to stick to and it doesn't cling to my Ikea kallax side table well enough. Ideally the surface dial would have a heavy base and haptic feedback, or at least have a little more resistance as it can feel a little touchy.

Overall the interface is efficient and easy to use through Volumio. I had a bug where the dial couldn't reconnect until I turned the Bluetooth off and on again in the surface dial settings interface, but that was kinda expected from the beta warning. Overall promising feature and I am looking forward to the implementation improving.

I've not tried a Surface Dial but I've noticed the same using the volume up/down buttons in Volumio on both my Windows laptop and Android phone. Testing I think this is a reflection of the -127.5 dB range being represented as a 100 point scale, with the 1.5 dB steps points being repeatable rather than random. Is this perhaps linked to a requirement for Roon? If it isn't then my initial reaction is that it would be nice if the Surface Dial could recreate the 0.5 dB steps that the remote control does.

I have been using Roon for control most of the time, but I just tried stepping the volume up and down in Volumio on Android and observed the same behavior like you said.

I'm not sure how the implementation works, but it would definitely be nice to be able to choose different hardware or access to information that would make it easier to build my own hardware that doesn't rely on IR.

After an initial problem where Volumio stated there was no blue-tooth adapter available, I have now got the Surface Dial paired with the Studio.

I contacted Minidsp Support who asked me to send them the log files. They sent specific instructions for how to produce these which specified powering down the Studio, then powering it up again and only then inserting the EDUP before logging into Volumio with dev settings. Afterwards I then logged in with the normal log-in and the blue-tooth adapter was found and the Surface Dial paired up without issue.

I had already tried powering down and unplugging the EDUP and then reinserting it before contacting Support, but I can only think that previously I inserted the EDUP before powering up the Studio. So perhaps the sequence of first switching on and then inserting the EDUP was significant. Then again, perhaps it's just coincidence.

Just to add, I have been very impressed with the responsiveness of the Minidsp Support Team so a big thank you to them.  . . .and now to try it out.

Can anyone confirm please that the Surface DIal controls the overall volume of the SHD regardless of which input is being used - i.e. not just volumio sources? -

I ask as I see the setup is via the volumio element of SHD.

Ideally I'd like to also be able to control the other inputs volume like Toslink and SPDIF, in addition to Roon streams via volumio.

Many thanks
