I have an SHD Pro. I was hoping to upgrade the Volumio app to the latest version with the Tidal plug-in.

I just did a factory reset of Volumio.  The factory version is 2.373 released Mar 1 2018.  This version has a plugins menu under the settings gear icon. I go into the menus to update Volumio.  It checks for an update and says that v2.387 is available.  I click OK, it downloads, and the Volumio server resets.  When Volumio comes back up, it reports v1.001 released Oct 1 2018.  This version has no plug-ins menu!!!  When I "check updates" a popup says that v1.111 is available.  When I click OK to download it, it fails the "integrity check" with the message

System Software Integrity check failed, manually edited files were detected. System Software Update is not possible under those circumstances. Please execute a Factory Reset or Delete User Data, then retry.

I didn't edit any files, never used SSH.  As far as I know everything is as the factory left it.  I "delete all user data" and get the same message.  When I do a factor reset, I end back up at v2.373 (after running initial setup again) and repeat the cycle all over again.
I have the latest firmware 1.29 installed.

Volumio and SHD are different things inside the samn box. Volumio gets updated in the Volumio app. Current version is 1.111.

The SHD software is called the SHD plugin. The SHD plugin rund on a Mac or Windows computer. You have to download the current version from the Minidsp site and use the pc  connected over USB to the SHD to upload the new SHD software. Current SHD plugin is 2.73 I think.

Read the manual for updating the SHD plugin.

What is a „SHD Pro“?

I recommend to ask the minidsp support. The behavior does sound strange. Maybe you have to install the system from scratch on the SD card. The support will tell you what to do best.

Also I do not believe that the problem could have to do with an too old SHD firmware. But certainly all three things should be up to date. The plugin software on the PC, the firmware of the SHD (including the DSP code) and also volumio.

I expect they meant SHD Studio.

@JaapDeventer has covered the main points here I think. I'll just perhaps stress that the Volumio build on the SHDs is unique to miniDSP, including the embedded Tidal and Qobuz support, as well as the options to change inputs and presets.

I'll give them a try.

Yes, agree that would be unusual.  I had updated the firmware and the SHD software (both PC and on unit).  Did it again, just to be sure.  No difference in behavior.  Updating Volumio goes through the sequence of versions and error messages described.

Which make the version reported by Volumio even more odd.  Snapshot after doing a "factory reset" and trying to update.  Current version is 2.373, updating to 2.387.

That screen capture is not from your SHD, is it???
You keep going like this, you're going to brick your ARM processor and have to remove the SRAM card and re-flash it in your computer to get back on the air.  :)
I suggest to stop what you're doing and just wait for miniDSP to provide the official update.

Version 1.111 is the latest version of Volumio that should be installed.  The latest Volumio 3 version has not been adapted to SHD usage, yet, AFAIK.
And, from what I read, numerous users are having issues with the new Ver 3. on RPi platforms.  :)

Current version is 2.373, updating to 2.387.

How did you get the version 2.373 installed? Did you do it yourself? Or did you buy the device 2nd hand?

Yes, yes it is.
Got my first replay from tech support.  They are equally confused.

Bought the unit factory fresh 2018-09-26.  Have done no customization, just firmware updates.
Version 2.373 shows up after doing a factory reset inside of Volumio's System menu or using the USB drive factory reset.
Tinkered with Volumio after I bought it, didn't get it, never used it.  I got excited when I saw that Tidal is now supported on the SHD products, started trying to upgrade to the latest Volumio... and you know the rest of the story.

On the last point, Tidal has been supported for over two years (possibly since launch), but Tidal Connect has not and still isn't.

I can only assume version numbering has changed because 2.373 was known about 3 years ago.

www.minidsp.com/forum/shd-series/14693-shd-recieved

It appears to have been a legitimate neo2 build

@Entripy - there are MiniDP-specific versions of Volumio with their own numbering. 2.373 has never been a valid version for the SHD series.

Well MiniDSP seemed to ship it to at least 3 SHD buyers 3 years ago. And they are just the ones who mentioned it in this forum so it was likely more common.

Actually make that 4 people. I'm pretty sure my first SHD that I bought in 2018 came with Volumio 2.x.

My guess is they forgot to change the version number when they initially derived the SHD version from the nanopineo2 version.

Seems like this is a situation where John will have to remove the SD card, and re-flash with the proper nanoPI SHD version.

Dave.

This is what your screen should look like:
