Hi,
it's definitely necessary to update the underlying OS. At the moment volumio is based on Debian Jessie which is two generations behind and out of service.

From a MiniDSP SHD standpoint, is there anything that Volumio 3 adds that we would care about?

Other than security from having a later OS, it looked like the big things were the audio processing path and multi-room sync. Given the limited processing power of the embedded Pi board, I'm not sure if we can do much with the former. The latter doesn't sound like it would be too relevant to most people using a SHD.

Although, if the Volumio 2 framework is no longer going to be supported (?) moving forward, then it may be best if we switch over as well.

If you're fine with the bugs and idiosyncrasies of the current version then keep it. I would like a new, more professional, less buggy interface. thanks

I was seriously asking what's in it that we care for. Those sound like some good reasons - unnecessary snarkiness aside. ;-)

I felt I was being baited a little bit and I had to take it. ;-)
I have no idea what's in it and how does it look like but I can only hope it's better than the current version.

Ha ha, no worries. I tried a google search and the only pic I found seemed that it looked the same, but I wouldn’t take that as gospel. I only use it via Roon, so I never see it other than to muck with settings so Im not too familiar with its appearances.

Isn't Roon something you have to pay for, too? TBH I have enough monthly fees to pay I don't need yet another one!  :-)
I paid for the equipment, I pay for spotify and qobuz..it's enough! I want all in one solution and I want it for free. lol
There are some very annoying bugs in Volumio2 I hope they wold be solved in v3  like the program getting stuck on playing the same song, playlists not getting memorized properly, clunky interface...and the list goes on.

Aye, Roon is another cost, but the interface is so super nice. I’m doing annual subscriptions - lifetime is crazy expensive.

In addition to SHD, I've been messing around with a RPi4/Pi2 Design streamer with Volumio OS. As far as I can tell, this device tells me that Volumio OS is current (i.e., no upgrades available) at Volumio 2.917. Where did you hear of this announcement?

If its the Volumio app that's buggy and you are on Android you should try Bubbleupnp. I don't have any issues with streaming from NAS and Tidal.

Uhhhh, everything?

Anyone would be crazy to not want the current SHD/Volumio2 UI cleaned up. That alone is worth implementing the new Volumio for SHD series. Then there’s the part about it being faster, more stable, future proof, having a new sound engine, a better plugin system, and that Volumio 2 will no longer be maintained, so… it’s basically all good and should be delivered to us.

It looks like it was released mid-Oct. If Volumio 2 is EOL, I can't see why MiniDSP won't eventually get it to us.

Hi,
yes, there are things we care about other than security. The libraries are deadly old, so it's not possible to use any newer squeezelite versions. I guess this applies to other modern software too. I only use squeezelite as external application.
