Apologies if this has been discussed before - please direct me to the discussion if this is the case and a resolution that works has been proposed.

I recently purchased a MiniDSP SHD. All is fine except I cannot reliably play music from any Iphone via USB. Tried Iphone SE Gen2 (2 different phones), Iphone X and Iphone 13 Mini. It either does not work at all or I need to turn of the SHD and back on again then it would play for a few seconds before cutting out again. I have tried 8 different USB cables, some seems to work better than others but none reliably. This includes the supplied USB cable. Also tried a Jitterbug between the cable and the lightning connector without success. Even tried a USB cable with a lightning endpoint thus no adapter required and this one does not work at all.

Some cables work reliably with an Android phone although you can change the volume on the Android phone which is not that case on the Iphone which makes me think I am not bypassing the Android built in DAC.

This is not my preferred way of playing music since JRiver Media center from my laptop sounds much better and the USB connection with the laptop is stable. But I do from time to time want to play something from Qobuz or Tidal from my phone or my sons want to play something. I have used about 7 DACs (Topping, Schiit, Burson, RME) before this one and none of those had this issue.

Please let me know if any of you have/had similar issues and how to resolve. This is very frustrating.

If your phone and SHD are on the same network, you can use AirPlay and forget USB...

Thank you for the response but I am aware of this and might revert to in future. I live in a remote area and do not have cable internet - I use cell phones for hotspot and currently do not use a router although I might just to resolve this issue. But in the meantime I would like to use the USB cable, it is a very easy and simple way for my family to play a few songs.

Am I the only one with this problem - is there an issue with my SHD? This should not be a problem.

It seems like the Apple branded adapter causes issues. Also the cable I have that bypasses the adapter does not work at all - weird. I will however look for a non-Apple branded adapter to try and report back.

 

Unfortunately the 3rd party USB to lightning adapter does not work at all. The Apple branded one works for a couple songs (with the best out of 8 different USB cables) and then stops.

Can anyone who is successful in playing music from an iphone to the SHD via a USB cable please let me know how you are doing this.

it worked for me. Just tested it. I had the same thoughts and tryed.1. Apple USB+Lightning Power Adapter via 2. Supra Excalibur and 3. Iphone SE IOS 15.4
I think most USB Cable should work.

I think maybe the IOS Version makes it working…hope for you too..
