Thanks to all!
Is this just a case of someone messing with some code somewhere without doing proper testing or what?
I was under the impression that this is a 'sealed system' until updates are applied on my part.  I guess I was wrong...

No, nothing changed, there were no updates made. It was "just" an unfortunate, unforeseen certificate which expired.
This certificate is needed for communication between Volumio and various services like Tidal, Qobuz and some webstation, which cut communication when it happened.
The certificate has been renewed and therefore needed a software update on your device to take effect.

You can use Bubbleupnp. It's got a setting for +/- volume buttons that works very well with SHD Studio.

Jaap,  I don't think I need yet another variable thrown in the mix. I am into listening to music more than into finding workarounds to various bugs. Plus it seems bubble it's limited to 44hkh 16 bit. But I read about this only briefly so I maybe off on that.
Volumio has a GUI volume bar that used to work perfectly fine for me,   If they just get that back into working order it's all I would need.

I am happy to communicate that my GUI volume control issue are fixed.  Solution: firmware update.  My bad for just updating the SHD program and thinking that would also get the firmware done.

Thanks for fixing this so quickly!  I'm a brand-new SHD user and was setting up my system Saturday night.  I was losing my mind over why I couldn't log into my Tidal account.  I figured it was Tidal, so I signed up for Quobuz, and I couldn't log into that either.  So all that craziness led me to this group, and specifically to this thread.  And behold!  A fix was made available only hours prior.  I updated the FW and Volumio version, but still didn't work.  I ended up doing a factory reset on my SHD, and it worked.  Later I learned a simple power boot would have worked, but either way, I'm good now!  So far I'm enjoying this SHD!

I updated to version 1.111 but squeezelite plugin still not working! In the meantime I build my own image based on DietPi 64-bit PREEMPT (low-latency) Linux including squeezelite.
Connected USB-out to USB-in (input USB) which sounds (much) better than via internal I2S (input LAN) ...

OK sorry for being slow, can you explain that USB2USB connection again? What USB are you talking about?  I was also looking at a proper way to connect a computer to the SHD.
thanks

You can use the USB input (select USB) to connect your PC. I'm using the USB input now for the build-in streamer (FriendlyElec NEO3) with my own image/software. In my image I don't use the I2S on GPIO but as said the USB port of the NEO3. So the connection is NEO3 USB OUT -> SHD Studio USB IN and the USB input is selected on the SHD Studio  i.s.o. the LAN input ;-)

In the meantime I fixed the squeezelite issue with the old (well)-known procedure:

1. download www.minidsp.com/media/kunena/attachments...elite-1.9.6.1198.zip and uncompress this zip. Don't use a newer version, since it will not work!
2. in the (windows) explorer, goto : \\ip_of_your_shd\Internal Storage and copy the downloaded file with name squeezelite there
3. ssh into your shd studio (for this you need ssh credentials supplied by miniDSP Support) and issue the following commands:
4. sudo mv /opt/squeezelite /opt/squeezelite_old
5. sudo mv /data/INTERNAL/squeezelite /opt/squeezelite
6. sudo chmod ugo+x /opt/squeezelite
6. reboot shd or restart squeezelite from webinterface.
7. edit the parameters for squeezelite on the shd webpage under http://ip_of_your_shd/plugin/music_service-squeezelite to your flavour. I only changed Alsa Parameters in 333:3::1: and Extra Parameters in -b 20000:60000 -r 192000. No upsampling for me cause it sounds worse IMHO.

Now I was able to compare the Volumio squeezelite implementation using I2S (Output is [(hw) I2S Out] PCM5102a and SHD Studio input selection is LAN) and USB (Output is [(hw) SHD] Direct hardware devicewithout any conversions and SHD Studio input selection is USB). For me USB is the winner! I use a decent USB-A to B cable (AQ Carbon). Also replaced the SMPS by a 12VDC LPS. Don't like SMPS in my audio-system(s).

Next test was with my own squeezelite image (DietPi PREEMT Linux with my specific settings). This squeezelite only (no WEB interface) is again a step forward. I use a seperate LMS server on a dedicated SBC (Pine64 PRO) also with 12VDC LPS. LMS could be added in my image for people who haven't a LMS server active. But I prefer squeezelite ONLY with separate LMS server.

The miniDSP is in all 3 test situations connected to the Denafrips Terminator DAC via AES/EBU interlink. With this setup it is easy to compare and hear the differences ;-)

BTW: squeezelite is also supported by Roon if you activate the Enable Squeezebox Support in de Setup Window of the Roon Core ...

Sorry again, my problem maybe a little different...the only signal I seem to be able to put through USB is audio which, I find, is far from ideal.  Is that the only option? The other USB is for mass storage only it seems.

Which device do you want to connect to the SHD STUDIO? Is it a PC?
