Hi there

I want to connect iPhone to SHD studio direct to play apply music. Is that I only need to get a USB-C digital adapter and a USB cable?

thanks

If you activate the shairport sync in the settings of volumio you should be able to stream music from your iphone via airplay.

Sorry, but I am not using Apple Music or Airplay myself. I only know (if I am not wrong) that Airplay is able to stream in CD quality (44,1 kHz, 16 bit). So this would be lossless as long as you do not stream hires material (like 96 kHz 24 bit) if Apple Music is offering such material.

Maybe someone else can help here?

Thx. I understand more now. Just check this web page (support.apple.com/en-hk/HT212183) and found that it requires wired connection to enjoy lossless music up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Since MiniDSP SHD is working on 32-bit with max. input rate at 192kHz, it should work with wired connection to iPhone playing lossless music. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am also very interested in connecting (via Lightning port USB) my iPhone/iPad to the SHD to playback Apple Music in hi-res lossless. I don't want to stream, I want a wired connection and fully digital path to my speakers.

Thx.

That’s what I want to do as well and wonder to know if there is noticeable difference. To do this, u may need to have a USB-C digital AV multi-port adaptor. But I haven’t tried it.

I think so, going by the video below, which notes it's only necessary to go this route for 96 kHz or 192 kHz content. So you may want to consider only bothering to connect the cable if listening to this type of content.

Remember that the SHD  resamples everything to the internal sampling rate of 96KHz, no matter the input sample rate.

Hi I chanced upon this thread and also curious to find out more. BTW the link to apple support that you attached above suggested the use of wired connection to headphone in order to enjoy lossless format on iPhone was purely because the AirPods Pro over bluetooth does not support lossless format. But I believe airplay connection from your iPhone to SHD should be  able to stream high resolution formation. Well, at leas that is what I have tried recently and certainly can hear the difference between normal AAC format to ALAC. The bass and dynamic range has certainly improved. Of course I cannot be sure if it is at full 32bit/192kHZ but it is certainly a marked improvement over normal streaming that I used to have over Spotify.

That is correct. You got it!
The digital input on the SHD is able to receive sample rates from 32 up to 216 kHz.
The digital output on the SHD is able to transmit 24-bit / 96 kHz.
Wired connections should have better audio quality, performance, and stability.
