So, let's say I use my SHD as master (preamp, Dirac), use output 1/2 HP-filtered (in my case treble, analog out) and let output 3/4 be LP filtered (in my case mid and bass).
Then take the digital out 3/4 on the SHD to digital in on a 4x10 HD and there do LP/HP/LP crossover and take the analog out for mid and bass?

Will this work?
* As I understand it the latency in 4x10 HD is a couple of ms so no problem to compensate in SDH?
* Will 4x10 HD manage all possible digital formats from SHD or can it be some incompatibility?
* Can I be affected of noise from the 4x10 HD? I don't know how the volume control is implemented in SHD but in this case 4x10 HD will come after the volume in SHD, and then directly connected to the power amps.
* How will the apps turn up in the computer (Mac for me), is it two different apps, can I manage both at the same time (connect my Mac to both SHD and 4x10 HD through usb simultanesly)?

Why bother splitting the signal out of the SHD? I would just use output 1/2 to the 4X10HD and do the crossover completely in the 4X10HD. This would eliminate any issues with managing delays between the SHD and 4X10HD.

The SHD will always output a 24 bit / 96 kHZ SPDIF signal regardless of input, the 4X10HD will have no issues with this.

I've done a similar setup with a SHD Studio and a miniSHARC, with both always connected to a mac mini via USB. This worked fine but I was only able to use one plug-in at a time.

I guess that the DAC in SHD is better than 4X10HD so my thought was to at least use it for the highs.
Michael, no pblem with noise in your similar setup?

No noise issues. Volume control in the SHD is 32 bit and responds like you would expect, noise decreases until you reach the DAC noise floor (or I should say the noise floor of the ADC of the measurement interface when making measurements).

I've attached some measurements made using a MOTU M4 showing the SHD + OpenDRC-DA8 (performance of the 4X10HD should be better from a THD+N perspective) at various volume control positions on the SHD .

Any reason you are concerned with noise on the 4X10HD? How sensitive are your tweeters?

Thanks, yes those measurements looks good for sure.
The only reason I asked about noise is that I have previously experience of DSP:s where the noise absolutely is an issue IF you put the DSP last in the chain, i.e. after the volume control, which will be the case here.

My SHD has no noise issues at all, can't hear anything (well, almost) even with maxim volume and my ear close to the speaker.
I have medium/high sensitive speakers now, around 92dB/2.83V, but the setup I'm thinking of will have more sensitive treble speaker, around 100dB.

But the setup I was describing in the first post will in that case use the SHD for treble, and 4x10 HD for mid and bass, even though I get your point that it would be more practical to use the 4x10 HD for all crossover points. But then I have bought a pretty expensive volume control with Dirac in the first place....

Anyway, big thanks for the answers!
