Thank you, everyone, for the help.
I want to keep you all up to date on this, as I am sure I am not the only one.

Tech Support responded to my ticket, suggesting that my USB connection was faulty.
I was using only the short USB cable provided by minidsp.
But why not? Got another USB cable and gave it a try.
Again, I WAS able to get "online" and connect, and I attempted a settings restore.
BUT, as before, the SHD disconnected after 10-15 seconds, in the middle of the restore.
Now, it will not connect at all.

I'm giving it some time out before attempting again.

The SHD is currently functioning, through Volumio, as a preamp and streamer, but none of the other features of the SHD are available to me.

Grr.

Stef

Update.

I have had success! phew.
I used another mac with an older operating system.
First and unsuccessful attempts were on MacOS Big Sur 11.1.

Successful attempt was with High Sierra 10.13.6.

To the Dev team: Apple has made it extremely difficult to retrieve old systems--it was pure luck that I was able to get a working High Sierra.
SHD updates for new MacOS systems would be great!

Thank you all for your help.

I think you should continue your dialogue with Support directly rather than here but I'll just comment that I'm certain there are many people who use SHDs with more modern Mac operating systems. I use Windows 10 myself so can't comment from personal experience.

Thanks.
I am continuing with support, but I think it's important to share this, just in case it happens to someone else. I agree about operating systems. I had read, before I purchased, that the system was in fact Big Sur compatible.
We will see.
At the moment, I'm relieved to have at least cracked the shell.

Thanks,
Stef

Glad to hear that you figured it out!
We won't duplicate content as explained before, it's dual work for nothing.. :-)
We (and lots of customers) run Big sur on few of our macbook pro here.. No problem at all for both Dirac live and all our plugins.

Most likely something else that is either blocking the communication (firewall/antivirus) or stopping the control.. We'll investigate in the ticket.

I've had the same issue with a MacBook Air 2020 with Big Sur OS11 installed.

I worked with support and overcome the problem.

The MacBook Air onIy has USB - C connection so I used the supplied cable, putting the USB -A connector into the USB hub and this was forever connecting and disconnecting.

The solution was to purchase a USB - B to USB - C cable and it has always worked since.

I also have an older MacBook Pro 2015 with Big Sur and this connects with the supplied cable (as the MacBook has USB-A ports, as per supplied SHD cable).

Thank you.
I have not had any luck so far with my Macbook running Big Sur. I have had success with a different computer running an older system.
That said, I do NOT think the problem is with the system; so many folks are running Big Sur without trouble.
I'm guessing bad usb on my macbook?
Anyway.. the saga continues.. Support team is being great! Although without success.
I'll follow up if we get this fully resolved.

thanks again,
Stef

Final updates on this: No resolution or complete diagnosis, but appears to be an issue with my computer. Using another computer and all is well.

UMIK-1 DIRAC calibration on Mac OS BigSur working: how to

I run Mac OS Big Sur on a MacBook Pro with 4 usb-c port.
I didn't find my UMIK-1 at first, following the Dirac setup pdf issued by mindsp
The UMIC was connected with a usb-c to usb-c cable to the MacBook Pro
the MiniDSP SHD was connected using a printer type usb cable (SHD side) inside a multi usb hub going into usb-c in the MacBook Pro. I will buy a printer type usb to usb-c cable in the future to get rid of the usb hub...but it works.
MiniDSP SHD app on latest version 1.15
Dirac app on 3.1.1
File sharing allowed, firewall allowing SHD and Dirac
Dirac didn't find the umik-1 nor the SHD on opening no matter what I tried.
BUT when I launched DIRAC using the button "start Dirac live software" from inside the MiniSHD app then Dirac finds the SHD and then the mic and everything is working like a charm!
Great great result after room correction!!
