Have you checked what the current mapping is @RichB?

I cannot control the Volume from the Roon Bridge nor from QUBOZ on 1.073 and the neo3 hardware.

Nope :) . What device do you look at and press to change the volume? Although I think @stouthart may have solved the issue and I need to look harder when I get home :) .

You could make the adjustments in Volumio....

On minidsp-shd.local/playback page I still have 1% increments, volume slider at bottom of every page is 5% indeed.

Ah, that might be it. I couldn't find a view last night other that the horizontal slider.

I was a bit flummoxed by the new very undiscoverable UI too. Found the main rotary volume control by clicking on the MiniDSP icon top left.
I'm rather glad I only use Volumio minimally because 1.076 doesn't look like a UX improvement so far.

I've now found 4 volume controls in Volumio, appropriate given the name I suppose. The rotary one on the playback page, the linear one at the bottom and one for each zone which actually controls the SHD volumes directly. I think never using any of them is probably still best for my sanity. Remote control it will be.

As long as we’re talking volume, I suggest there should be an option in the Volumio settings to remove it from the interface. Maybe a slow, 1% volume up and volume down down button like you’re asking for, but not the current touchscreen point-and-go bar or wheel.

E.g. on my iPad, if I screw up and fat-finger trying to press the “show queue” button in the bottom right, I’m going to tap the 0db volume area on the bar. Depending on amplifier and speaker, that could be a devastatingly expensive mistake. I don’t think any system should be able to jump to full output with a single, instantaneous touch like that. It also means I’ll never share the browser or app portal to any guests since I wouldn’t trust them to understand what’s at stake.

Last bit on this, I had been recommended another upnp app called mconnect on this forum. I paid my $5 and at first I really liked it, the interface with Tidal is better than Volumio by a long shot (including latest 1.73/76), but the deal killer was the mconnect app maps volume to the rocker buttons on the side of my iphone and it was super buggy. A single accidental press in my pocket jumped the volume from background music to 0db. Luckily I was playing a low-energy recording of acoustic instruments. I warn against using that app.

I've said it before but it obviously deserves repeating. If, in the SHD plugin, you adjust the output gains lower such that 0dB on the SHD cannot go dangerously loud, nothing dangerous to ears or equipment can occur, no matter what indirect manner of controlling volume is used.

I suppose that’s true and a good idea to try, but there is something of an annoying range there. If it’s a low voltage source like my phono stage and a quiet recording, I really have to push the volume out of the SHD to get enough signal to the amp. Other sources are stronger, and if that source is playing a loud, bassy signal pushing -1 or -2db on the input meter, then I’m comparatively holding way back on volume setting. Point is, if I set the plugin output controls to allow me to push quiet sources/recordings as loud as they need to be, but then I’m listening to something much stronger and hit the volumio volume bar wrong, then I could still be in trouble. Doesn’t have to be either-or with your plugin solution, but the easiest for a lot of people would be to offer a checkbox in the Volumio settings to remove the volume bars and wheels altogether.

Are you saying that installing the Roon Bridge plugin means that if you browse to the Volumio interface you are unable to adjust the volume?

Using Qobuz in Volumio doesn't disable the volume control. Or at least I know it didn't in the pre-update version of Volumio as I used this combination.

Unless you mean something else by 'native Qobuz support'?

I agree that trying to set a volume limit in the plugin doesn't work well due to variations in volume between different recordings and sources.

If Volumio is allowed to control the volume, then I would like to see the SHD implement a maximum volume to allow the user to protect their systems. If this cannot be done, then I would prefer the volume control option to be disabled and use the native volume control.

Though, I expect that Roon Ready requires volume control.

Yes, diferent volume sources are still a problem but you can at least set output gain for the loudest which may help to some extent.
For some reason S/PDIF input from my CD transport appears to be much louder than any other digital source.

The outputs gains are per preset so it would be possible to have different presets for different volume sources but that is obviously still prone to the complexity leading to bad combinations due to confusion.
