I'm commissioning my new SHD. I would like to set Volumio so that it goes to an inactive state at power up, doing nothing at all, except perhaps listening for a connection to the web server on the Ethernet port.

Can this be done?

(I've not read of any way to do what you have in mind.)

Why?

I won't be using Volumio. It's better in general to disable software that is not in use, and particularly so when that software has access to the volume knob.

Volumio runs on its own little ARM PCB near the right rear corner of the SHD. Because it has its own PCB/CPU software running on it is very unlikely to interfere with the main SHD PCB.

You could fiddle with the SDcard that Linux/Volumio runs from but given that its running a full Linux stack I can't imagine that disabling just Volumio would have much effect.

For what it's worth I've never seen a problem with Volumio somehow managing to cause an unexpected effect while I've been using other inputs.

'Seems like you're looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Anyways, just disconnect the network cable or wifi adaptor. Volumio won't bother you at all.

I agree this seems to be worrying about a non-problem but removing network connections won't stop Volumio starting.

You could remove the nanopi board and see if the SHD still works. But I won't be the one to try.

The goal is to eliminate the potential for unexpected behavior, especially where there is risk of damage to equipment. (Such as blown speakers, in this case.) From a software design perspective, it's a small thing to allow an unused module to be disabled. So I thought I would ask if that ability exists. Apparently not. I won't lose sleep over it. Thanks to all for your input.

The best way to protect speakers is to set the SHD Plugin output gains so that even at 0dB SHD level nothing blows up.

A simple workaround:
Just add a bash script that will shutdown the nanoPi (exec shutdown) and add it to cron/init, so it will run during bootup and will immediately shutdown the nanoPi each time its powered on.

Bear in mind that in case you want back the volumio in the future, you will no have other option than rewriting the volumio image to the SDcard.

Further, I really do not know if this is breaching any rules concerning warranty etc. You may need to ask miniDSP support team for this as well as for SSH login process.

I didn't say it wouldn't start.....I said it wouldn't bother you. :)

Unless a person has a reason to think it will do something unexpected, I don't see any point in "disabling" it. However, the easiest way for a non-techie to accomplish this goal would be to pop the top and remove the SDcard. I guarantee it won't start then. :)

I know but it wouldn't bother anyone any less than with the network connection still in place,. The main point is that it wouldn't achieve what the OP wanted.

Would this just affect Volumio or anything else I wonder? If the former then you make a good point :) .

You can disable most features on the My Music. That is what I did.

I found this request a little "funny" too. But then I have to say that since Volumio can control the master volume of the SHD, things are delicate.

Today, I was using the toslink input of my SHD studio (watching TV). I took my laptop, loaded the page minidsp-shd.local/ in a browser, and as the page is loading, it instantly turns the volume of the SHD down to "0" in the volumio web interface, and to -127.5dB on the SHD. Annoying.

So I do agree that the scenario where the SHD is used with an input other than LAN, and where the volumio interface is loaded in a web-browser, it can accidentally, and instantly change the master volume and SHD, for apparently no reason - at least without volontary input. That can be very surprising, let alone dangerous. I wish there was a way to unlink the master volume of the SHD from the control from Volumio - this has not been a very successful feature.
