I understand the USB Host port on the SHD is for the Wi-Fi adaptor. However, is it possible to use it to power a different accessory e.g. a Chromecast Audio.

You can use the USB type A port that's normally reserved for an external drive in Volumio for that (as long as the USB device does not need more than 500mA of power). I use that port to power a small SPDIF switch box, which only uses about 200mA.

The USB type B port does not provide power. It can only be connected to a host (computer or the official Wi-Fi adapter).

Thanks for the response.

The Chromecast Audio draws 1A. So, that might be a bit risky. Would that damage the USB port if it tries to draw more than 500mA?

I don't think it would damage the USB port, but the device wouldn't get enough power to run properly. That could possibly damage the Chromecast. I personally have my Chromecast audio hooked to a 10 port Anker charging brick, along with a number of other USB devices. I have the SPDIF switch hooked to the SHD since I wanted it to only be powered on when the SHD is on.

Just did a quick search and found that the Chromecast audio can technically run on 500mA, but there are reports of stability issues when doing so. I would advise against it.

I use a 2 port Anker battery pack with my CCA - but I keep forgetting to unplug it overnight.

Using the USB port would have been tidier - SHD with built-in Chromecast effectively.

I plan to order an SHD in the new year. But I won't be using Volumio to stream music. I've tried it and casting (Tidal in my case) to a CCA is much better. YMMV, of course.
