Hi folks,

short question which I couldn't find an answer in the forum.

Is it possible to login to the operating system of the SHD and install software? For example with SSH as root.

I think there should be a linux system which volumio runs on or something like this.

I want to use the SHD with my logitech media server, so i need a squeezelite client to run on the device. If this is not possible I would need an extra streamer (maybe raspberry pi) to stream music to the USB audio.

Thanks and regards

Isn't that function included in the Volumio plugin installer? Or are you wanting something else? (I am not an LMS user.)

Great! Thanks for sharing the picture.
I actually didn't own a SHD yet.
Wanted to know if I get one sooner or later. :-D

Actually I run a DDRC-24.

Thank you.

I'd hold off buying before someone can confirm whether those plugins work or not. Some others listed on the SHD don't...

Well.
looks like it is a really old squeezelite version from 2018. Version 1.1.1.
An actual version would be 1.97

And yes, if someone could confirm whether or not the squeezelite plugin works, that would be very appreciated.

I'm actually running LMS Version 8, because of some changings by the tidal streaming service.

I know the SHD works with tidal too. But i need to use LMS for my multiroom setup which also uses a tidal plugin by itself. So i could play music from tidal or local music in any room.

The built-in squeezelite Volumio plugin does not work (or at least it did not for me).

If you submit a support ticket the devteam will send you the SSH credentials.

See thread below for instructions on how to get squeezelite running on the SHD.

www.minidsp.com/forum/shd-series/17077-s...edia-server?start=30 (specifically Crissy's posts).

Okay.
Thank you.

If there is a way to SSH in the machine, that will do it for me.
I'm a bit curious what hardware is running in the SHD.

Does the streamer hardware in the SHD is a discrete part or
does the SHD rely on it.
The question: is the streamer just another separate module
which uses an input of the SHD module to play music thru,
or does the audio unit rely on the streamer?

Debian Jessie is kind of old and if you could just load a new OS onto the streamer with volumio or some other streaming software, that would be pretty cool.
Okay maybe the display and the IR would need some customization you could probably use from the original OS.

Volumio runs an a very small ARM board in the rear corner of the SHD and sends audio to the main SHD board through a serial digital audio interface. The small ARM board has the network port on it (and one of the USB ports) so you can SSH into this board. As far as the main SHD board, it can switch to the serial digital interface from the ARM board but knows nothing else about the Linux running on it or Volumio. This also explains why the SHD board itself can't use the network port.

In terms of the small ARM board, in principle it should be possible to run other Linux and streamer software on it but I don't know of anyone who has done that, As long as it outputs the correct digital audio serial signal that's all that matters to the SHD as far as I'm aware. Whatever runs on the ARM board would still be called the LAN input so no SHD firmware changes would be required.

Well, that's my understanding with my EE hat on having taken the lid off a few SHDs.

It is possible that Volumio manages to use the serial digital audio interface to control the SHD volume over some sort of side channel communication but it should also be possible to duplicate that with other streamer software or even just ignore it, initially Volumio couldn't control SHD volume and the bugs from adding that feature lasted some time, I am totally guessing now though.

I found some interesting insights on the following forum posting:

audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/56782-s...-on-the-minidsp-shd/

Looks like a nanoPi NEO2 is working in the SHD.
Nice to know :-)

You don't need to get Squeezelite working on the SHD in order to use it with LMS.

If you enable the uPnP/DLNA bridge plugin in LMS, you can play through that route, using the DLNA client in Volumio on the SHD. The only minor downside I've found is that gapless replay, and also replaygain, doesn't work.

I tried running music from LMS to a DLNA client.
But this didn't really work smooth.
And yeah, gapless replay is really nice to have.

I bought a nanoPi Neo3 and installed "dietPi" and squeezelite onto it.
It's available to install the actual squeezelite by dietpi-software.
This works really nice as a dedicated network player.
Boots up and plays in a few seconds (like 15 secs).

Best part is, the usb-port coming from the nanoPi has no humming sound (audible in the woofer of my mains) like I had when I connected my PC to the DDRC-24. Maybe because the nanoPi has no fan or any other sound diturbing parts.

cheers
