No, phono requires an external preamp.

A biquad PEQ could do the RIAA correction and the gain.
Maybe SNR would not be good enough but it could work!

I have the same problem and it also shows when using miniDSP RC commands send by my Harmony remote, so it is not related to batteries I think.

I think there is a clear sw bug somewhere in the SHD firmware...

How often you get this? I've had my SHD since January and have only had the one brief period I saw this, prior to changing the batteries in my remote. This was months ago now.

What firmware version have you been running when you've seen this?

Firmware is 1.18. This only happens once in a while (once per month or so)

I don't think I used that specific firmware actually, going form 1.15 to the current 1.19.

I think the second part is key and @entripy is correct that you want to use a proper phono pre-amp instead. Or stop playing vinyl ;) .

Edit: you might also find you simply can't get a loud enough output too.

There's also cartridge loading to consider, the 47k input impedance of the SHD is an ok resistance but without any added capacitance (which forms a second order lowpass filter with the inductance of the cartridge) the mechanical resonance of the cartridge will not be properly 'compensated'. That will lead to significant frequency response errors at HF. But apart from that, and noise and >50dB gain required, it will work in the sense that it won't catch fire :)
