My headphones are Sennheiser HD800S and the website I am using for PEQ settings is here.

Config 4 for headphone use only, output 1 linked to output 2, and the PEQ values are entered into the 10 Eq sets provided by the SHD plugin.

My question is the correct way of setting the -6.2dB "Preamp Setting" that is specified in the referenced website. Is this the correct way?

Hi,

You don't have to kling to a gain setting of ‐6.2 db. It simply doesn't matter if you feel comfortable regarding volume. It's just special for the authors setup. I would stick with 0 db attenuation.

There are 3 gain controls in shd. The first is in the routing matrix after dirac and before dsp processing, the second is after dsp processing and the third is the overall gain at the end, which you control via volume control. Make sure that you don't overdrive any section and have a decent level, eg 0 db, so that you don't loose signal quality. Digital volume control is lossy unless it's dithered.

No need for dithering in the SHD as it does its calculations in floating point and sends then I assume 24 or 32 bits to the DAC..

Hopefully you're right, in theory digital domains only drop least significant bits , that's lossy.

Thank you @chrissy. I changed to 0dB with no obvious problems. This really improves my HD800S listening experience (mostly classical music). For those interested here is the PEQ graph after the modification:

As a follow up reference to @chrissy contribution above, here is the flow diagram from the manual:

The red arrow is where the first gain control is. This flow diagram should be corrected to show that, IMO.
