Yup same as me. SHD is less than 7 metres away from the router, moving it does not help as it drops off everywhere it seems. Static IP has not helped at all. I know it has dropped connection to my router as I cannot ping the ip address when it goes offline (rather than just not being seen on the network). This is certainly not magic and I never said it was. It also certainly does not work reliably, as can be seen in my use and many, many others. I have requested a ticket for support but have had 0 response so far. Will see how long this takes. I guess if you are needing a wireless option and would actually like to use volumio to stream both off a server or off spotify, or hell even use the online radio function then this is not the box for you. Also if you are trying to reduce your box or interconnect count, this box is also not for you.

As it stands good old Moode connects fine via the wireless built into the Raspberry Pi 4. It does not drop out, ever (going on 6 months with no hassles whatsoever). It even works at the other end of the house. I will continue to use moode as my SSD based streaming solution connected via usb and will revert back to my chromecast audio connected to the SHD via toslink for spotify connect as that also never drops out, ever. Crazy that all these super low cost options work better than the non-magical wifi hotspot included as the fix in the SHD! Magic. Congestion. Gee.

Just thought I would add to the threads I had posted in that I have figured out a fix for the issue (though it does not fix the wifi issue directly). I purchased a TP-Link RE450 Dual-Band AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender that comes with a g-LAN port on it. I connected the SHD to this port with a LAN cable and removed the wifi dongle entirely. It is now super stable and hasn't dropped off since. Now this is kind of an annoying, $160 NZ fix for something that is meant to work straight out of the box... so just a heads up for anyone thinking about getting one and relying solely on the wifi connectivity. Don't take the gamble, it won't work as you expect. Minidsp should really ship these with a wifi expander or remove the details about the wifi being stable and reliable.

Hope that helps anyone looking to solve the problem. So long as you have a spare power socket near your SHD you can add one of these extenders and away you go!

If you are running a unifi point you can set up a scound wlan just for shd. With this extra wlan exclusiv for shd i got a stable connection.

I've had the same problem as OP which can't be reduced to distance from the router or other general wifi issues. My Allo DigiOne, which is using the same Edimax Wifi USB dongle, is sitting next to the MiniDSP SHD and never drops connection while I typically have to reset the router to have the MiniDSP be accessible via Roon if it sits for any longer than 10-15 minutes.

Based on reading this thread I gave the MiniDSP a dedicated IP and have let it sit for 3-4 hours and it's still accessible via Roon. I don't consider the issue definitively solved but will report back either way.

*Update* Three days after giving the MiniDSP a dedicated IP I've only had it drop connection once. I don't know that the issue is definitively solved, but this is the longest it's worked since I setup the unit over a month ago.

*Final Update* The dedicated IP did not work and connections still drop-out consistently. I'm chalking it up to a congested 2.4 ghz network environment and have invested in the travel router solution in bridge mode as my next step.

I had very little success using the supplied dongle for streaming over the LAN.

I picked up a portable router (TP-Link AC750) and set it up in Bridge (Client) mode. The router can be powered off the SHD's USB port and provides an Ethernet port that can be connected to the SHD's Ethernet port. This has been absolutely rock solid with no dropouts whatsoever, even when streaming hi-res audio.

Yup my experience exactly. I used a wifi extender with a hard wired lan cable output that goes straight to the SHD. I could never get reliable wifi connection with the SHD including using a static IP address etc. IMO do not purchase an SHD (or SHD studio) with the expectation of using wifi. It will not work.

I bought mine with the expectation of it working, and it does - 100% - never missed a beat. So your statement that it won't work is wrong :)

Over wifi? Interesting, as I did think the issues I and others had experienced were universal.

I wonder if there is anything unusual about your router or internet connection?

Yes over wi-fi. Router is a Linksys on the ground floor. It squirts out wifi itself and, via a TP-Link bridge, is also connected by cat 6 cable to three TP-Link wi-fi access points scattered in the other corners of the house. All are set up with the same SSID so any device can connect to the strongest signal of the 4. The SHD is about 4 or 5 metres away from the nearest.

I only stream from a hard disc on a PC connected to the network, not from any on-line provider.

Had occasional glitches with my SBT previously but never with the SHD.

in case some are still having issues with the wifi:
as an alternative, I have succesfully tested this wifi bridge:
www.tp-link.com/nl/home-networking/range-extender/tl-wa850re/
less than $20. worked also in situations where the small wifi dongle gave issues . ymmv.
connects to your wifi and then wired ethernet to the SHD
and as added bonus, the USB host port remains available for e.g. an usb stick or disc with music
