Hi Rob,

I can only state that I purchased a miniDSP SHD from the miniDSP
web store not quite a year ago and did not have to pay an import
duty. I do not know the current or future status.

There is a similar topic at the following location.
www.minidsp.com/forum/minidsp-for-newbie...of-minidsp-shd-to-us

I'm sorry to not have a definitive answer, only my experience from
some months ago but may not be consistent with today.

I just received my MinDSP Shd 2 weeks ago and the shipper required me to pay approximately $45.00 before they would deliver.

Thank You Tariffs

One can always buy from an authorized US miniDSP dealer to avoid any worry/hassle.

Thanks. Can you tell us who carries the SHD in the US, or where you bought it from?
Last I looked, it was hard to find a dealer that stocked the SHD.

I bought my SHD from Deer Creek Audio

Back in October 2019 they had them in stock. I don't recall any problems finding my unit at the time, but of course, that was in the "before" time.

Well, just today I got hit with at $105 import duty charge for an SHD studio. Ridiculous. It's going back for a refund and I'll buy from a US dealer. Crazy that there's no heads up about this anywhere in the ordering process. Not cool.

Serious? This thread pretty much lines up what's to be expected.
Most every country has import fees...so there are NO surprises there. And if the rest of your homework had been done beforehand, with the very adequate heads up info on the minidsp website, the return policy is clearly stated so good luck with that. Even if you somehow manage to return it and reorder from US dealer, you will owe the import fees AND sales/use tax on the US purchase.

Yes, seriously. $105 in duty is a surprise. A visit to do my "homework" with an online duty calculator gave me $1.74 in duty for an $850 electronics item shipped from Hong Kong to USA. In another thread on this topic someone stated that they paid no duty on their order from miniDSP. I bought a cartridge from a dealer in Hong Kong this year with no import duty. Where on the website is there any indication of the amount of duty that that will be charged? Sorry, this is not terribly transparent on miniDSP's part.

It's not on the website because minidsp don't get the duty and have no idea what duty your country will charge.
In my experience paying similar duty still came out much cheaper than buying in my country.
Its similar for every product I've investigated or purchased, import duty is your problem and there's normally a disclaimer during the purchase process.
Yes, some folk are lucky and customs can't be bothered to charge import duty, lucky for them, but not to be expected.
And yes, duty calculators are complicated by the classification of products but when I did the research it was clearly going to be over 100, not 1.74.

As I recall, when I purchased my SHD from Deer Creek last year, they were about $100 higher than the miniDSP online store. I assumed that was because of the Import fees and ordered the unit from them because of the convenience - no delays, definite arrival date, etc. It was well worth the higher costs.

There really is no way of avoiding Import Fees without some sort of ethical compromise (lying on the form) on the part of the seller.
