I have a Microsoft laptop that has only one USB on the base system.
I have a Microsoft Dock for additional USB ports and a couple of other things.
If I use the Microsoft dock the computer indicates "USB device not recognized" when attaching the SHD. The drivers are properly installed.
I also have tried an Ancker USB hub as an alternative. I can plug the SHD in to that and it sees the SHD fine and appears to work as far as I can tell without a mic attached.
If I plus the SHD and the UMIK-1 mic in at the same time to the Ancker hub I get an error when running DIRAC "devicenotimplemented" and Dirac immediately closes. That error does not occur with only the SHD plugged in to the Ancker hub.

I may try a WI-DG to see if that works.

In the interim , does anyone have any ideas that I could try?

Unfortunately you can't run Dirac Live using a WI-DG. There is a warning to this effect on the product page.

That's a bummer for me.
I may end up having to re-sell the SHD. I don't want to shut my server down, disconnect it and move it to the room where the SHD resides every time I want to use it.

Hopefully an alternative will come up.

I bought a cheap second hand laptop to have near my SHD. Definitely worth it compared to selling the SHD.
Otherwise, I have used Dirac Live just fine with SHD and UMIK-1 connected to a hub. I suspect your laptop/hub are the problem rather than the SHD / Dirac Live.

I assume you are running Dirac Live 2 from the SHD plugin with all the latest drivers and firmware?

I've considered getting another cheap PC but another box to maintain doesn't thrill me a lot though.
It isn't likely a defect in the SHD software exactly but at the same time I've never seen software choke on a hub before in many years of using them. On three different hubs no less. Maybe I've just been lucky. There may be something odd about the USB driver in Windows for this make and model of laptop, who knows. These types of issues aren't always clear or easy to eradicate.

I am. I tried downloading and re-installing everything from scratch. It's odd the SHD seems to work from the hub fine until I add the Mic then a no go. I hoped using the WI-DG so I could avoid a hub entirely and try that but the WI-DG doesn't work on Dirac I guess. Ultrasonic replied to me (above) and saved me from that error.

Note that Dirac can suffer odd bugs, they keep old versions on their site, so perhaps worth testing some other versions. I update until one works well then stick with it.
