My "complaint" that it's too easy to go to -0 is only part of the issue. There are several issues with this implementation, and I think for a thousand dollar box a little more attention to detail should be expected.

Yes, full output should not be possible with one pinky touch or mouse click.

As stated, limiters are not the answer. I use all 4 of my presets, and I use my limiters to protect speakers and equipment, not side-step the phoned-in performance of a software engineer.

Also, to the person who compared this to cranking up the klipschorns, that's great, but klipschorns aren't 8 foot tall horns with 21" drivers, nor would it cost $700 to replace one of the tweeters, nor would it take $600 and 8 weeks to have a new Acoustic Elegance mid woofer re-made.

No, I'm not being overly dramatic, and I'm not over-stating the issue. These boxes are too expensive for this kind of stuff.

Imagine if Siglent's 5000 series oscilloscopes (same price range as SHD) had an issue with the software they came with that made it so that if you used the USB connection to the computer or used an external monitor, you couldn't zoom into your waveform past 10uS. Could you imagine? Oh, and then we go to the forum, like, hey what's up with this software...and get jumped by the guys who think the sun shines out of Siglent's rear end talking about "oh, stop complaining, just use the screen on the front, or, nobody needs to zoom in past 10uS anyway...

I'm certainly not going to obliterate my gain structure to overcome lazy software engineering, and by all means, if people choose to be accepting of issues like this, that's great. Don't use the broken features, or waste the other features trying to tame the broken ones, please. I won't. I'm not wealthy enough to accept mediocrity in products like this.

I appreciate the few people who've added some conversation here, but if this is going to turn into another game of dodge the fanboys, I'll just take yet another negative karma from you all, and delete the thread.

Meanwhile, I guess I'll put a lock and a key on all of the computers, phones and tablets capable of opening http://shd.

1) You might find staff at miniDSP were rather more inclined to spend time trying to resolve this issue for you if you took a less belligerent attitude.

2) How fast do you realistically expect any software change is likely to be made to resolve this? Unless you're happy to just not use your system for a good while I'd suggest that the suggestions made in this thread might actually help you out in the interim.

For info to all.....in case you're not aware. These characteristics exist in the larger Volumio implementations....not just the scaled down version used here by miniDSP.
This is 3rd-party software which miniDSP has limited control over. Any updates will come from Michelangelo and the Volumio folks.

Yes, there are SHD specific elements of the Volumio version used though so it seems at least possible that this could be resolved but would obviously require someone at miniDSP to ask for it.

Do you happen to have seen any similar issues raised with other devices?

Well of course. The specific issues mentioned in this thread are inherent to the Volumio software regardless of which device it's running on. I've even experienced the accidental volume maximum thing myself running Volumio on an RPi in another system that had no miniDSP products in it. In my case though, the gain structure is properly optimized so it didn't result in a dangerous or excessively loud result.

The Volumio software has numerous quirks in it. Heck, I've highlighted some of the other ones here on the miniDSP forum. But regardless, you understand them and you work around them the best you can while still using the software and waiting for it to get sorted.

With Bubbleupnp of MConnect app browsing for music on Qobuz and Tidal is okay but not great.

I have read but have not yet tried that it is possible to search and browser albums in the qobuz app and simply share an album to the bubble upnp app. So the bubble upnp app plays it to the streamer. Maybe this is a good alternative in some cases...

It's not totally obvious to me that the behaviour will definitely be the same on all devices. The full range on the Volumio control accommodates the 120 dB range of the SHD. Might not a device with a smaller dynamic range work better, thinking that the rull range of the Volumio dial would then match this smaller dynamic range? Also, is it not possible that some other device-specific Volumio implementations (such at that on the SHD is) could have a different mapping from device volume to Volumio volume so that it works better? I actually thought the latter was the most likely way that the (genuine) issue raised by the OP might be able to be resolved.

Well, if you have a couple of Rpi devices you can bench test against the SHD please post some results. I'd be interested to compare them to mine.

This setup/comparison is not without variables. The output board installed on the Rpi/Tinker/whatever may (or may not) have a DAC. And if it does have a DAC it may (or may not) have its own volume control capability. So, Volumio might be able to take control of it.....or maybe not. (Most of the DAC boards on top of Rpi boards probably have a PCM5122 setup of some sort.)
Plus, there are myriad other things that might confuse the issue as well. Normalization, ReplayGain, etc, etc, etc.

But, generally, you'll find the same "top-weighted" characteristic we experience here with the SHD/Volumio implementation.
