I have tried to find information on this, but so far found nothing.
Is it possible to set a global absolute maximum volume level to protect my stupidly expensive speakers from certain death at parties / sitting on the remote?

Please say yes :)

I'm afraid I believe the answer is no.

Using fixed in-line attenuators is one way you could limit maximum volume.

You could use a pre amp. Like I use an integrated amp with volume set at 12 o'clock.

Figure out how much below 0db you want as your max volume with current settings, Subtract that from the main input slider in the shd app. Bingo, your max level is now dropped.

Good point :) . I'm not sure if it might be better to do this with the output adjustment rather than the input though? It depends at what stage in the internal processing the attenuation is applied but I think it would be safer to apply it at the output stage. Although this would have to be applied for all presets.

Thank you for great suggestions! I agree that lowering the output gain is probably the way to go.
Is it possible to do this without having to run the Dirac measurements again? I'm having a little difficulties understanding the relation between the shd app settings and the dirac app settings.

You don't need to run DIrac again. These changes are purely in the SHD plugin.

So you only use two channels out of the SHD to the preamp, or how are you using channel 3/4?

Lowering the output gain on all 4 channels and on all the presets worked perfectly. Thank you for your help!

To the devteam: It would still be nice to have a global setting for this, along with a global "preferred volume" as the volume level when the unit is switched on.
My two cents :)

I'm sure what was meant was for the preamp to go before the miniDSP in the signal chain, not after. The fixed attenuators I suggested would be a cheaper way of achieving the same thing but wouldn't be adjustable. However, since as have very sensibly been point out you can do this with setting in the plugin this is all moot.
