Hi all,

I've happily used a 2x4HD for a couple of years but am considering upgrading to an SHD. I have two questions though:

1) It's not viable for me to get a direct ethernet connection from by router to where the SHD would go. Would it be OK to use something like the following to provide an internet connection to the ethernet port on the SHD?

www.amazon.co.uk/XINGDONGCHI-Wireless-N-...Z?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_5

For info. I currently stream Spotify over wifi using my laptop without issues, fed into my 2x4 HD using its USB input.

2) Is it possible to use a mix of RCA and XLR outputs at the same time? For example to use XLR outputs for the signal to my main speakers but an RCA output for a third channel going to my subwoofer?

3) Is there currently a way of streaming Amazon Music HD using an SHD? Currently I use Spotify but I might consider the upgrade at some point.

Thanks any help :) .

Hi there,

Regarding your first question I use a similar device from TPLink and it does the job. However, at least in my case, the wifi extender produced some audible noise when plugged in the same line with SHD. I moved it in another plug in the room and everything cleared.

Thanks. I'm actually now wondering if I no longer need anything like this. Can anyone confirm that if I were to buy an SHD now that it would come with a USB wifi dongle, and crucially that it is possible to stream using this? I think it is from what I've been reading since starting this thread...

1. My SHD came with a WiFi dongle. I've not used it because I have an handy ethernet port nearby and go with the wired connection. But the WiFi dongle should work just fine - there is no reason MiniDSP would include it if it isn't meant for streaming as the ONLY thing network connectivity is used for is streaming and control of streaming...

2. The XLR and RCA outputs are active at the same time. If you have, for instance, your left channel mapped to analog output 1, that means the RCA 1 and XLR 1 outputs will both present your left channel signal simultaneously.

3. No Amazon Music at this time. Note that this has nothing to do with MiniDSP - this is in Volumio's hands.

Cheers,
Robert

The possible purpose would be wireless control of the miniDSP configuration, which would still be a useful feature. I currently have to connect a USB cable to by 2x4 HD to do this.

Possible and actual are two different things. The USB port that the WiFi dongle plugs into is provided by and used by the internal Raspberry Pi. It's a USB-A connector. Control of the SHD functions is via the USB-B port. End of story.

Robert

That raises a slightly different question actually. Is it not possible to make changes to the SHD configuration using a WiFi dongle in the USB-A port? It would be a shame if this were the case.

It's more like the other side of the same question, but, correct, it's not possible. You use the included USB cable to connect and control the SHD settings.

Robert
