When I'm viewing YouTube videos on my laptop I would like to "cast" them to the SHD. Like you can with Chromecast audio to a hifi system.

Unfortunately I don't think that is possible.

To cast youtube it could work to use the Bubble UPnP server and the Bubble UpnP app (on Android). Maybe it works with the Bubble UpnP app already without the server. I am not sure. You share the video in the youtube app to the bubble upnp app and this casts it to the streamer.

Yes that works but only on a rooted Android phone.

I have tried it again on a normal, unrooted BQ smartphone and it did work:

youtube app => share to Bubble UpnP app => playing to Bubble UpnP server (installed on my Synology NAS) => being a openhome proxy to my streamer.

Without the Bubble UpnP server it did not work. But this can be related to my streamer (not a minidsp SHD). Because the SHD supports openhome, it might work directly without the Bubble server with a SHD?

Still I can't figure out how to send YouTube sound to the SHD.

If you're using a Mac, you can enable Shairport-Sync on the SHD and use the SHD as an Airplay speaker. This is working really nicely for me.

I am a new SHD user, so please forgive if I end up sounding naive.

I have followed the instructions provided by miniDSP in the "SHD Series User Manual" section 4.3. However, after plugging in the wifi dongle the unit does not seem to create the "miniDSP SHD" network.

Because of this, I cannot even set up network streaming from the hardwired network, let alone the desired wifi system.

I reached out to miniDSP for support a few days ago, but not yet heard back. Does anyone on the forum have some ideas for troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

I never used the wifi dongle to set up. I did plug it in to see if the SHD was visable over the router on my hardwired pc which it seemingly was not ( and PC  had no wifi card to view a wireless hotspot)

Thus , I  simply plugged a seperate ethernet cable into the SHD, and the hit the link on my pc to open the volumio web browser interface.  This play tunes and it states LAN on the SHD

Beyond that playing and sound over the usb was a simple as loading the drivers as instructed in the manual, an selecting SHD that magicall apears in thr pcs list of available devices. Qobuz on the pc  shows all the different drivers i can select...  Like 4 options or so... Shows  Bitrate ...etc.

Good luck.

I appreciate that you took the time to respond. I ended up giving completely up on the WiFi dongle, but I was ultimately able to get my SHD to connect by using a hard-wired ethernet cable. In my case, that required running cable to my stereo cabinet. The sound makes it worthwhile, but simple, it was not.

Yeah , I feel the pain.
You can try a mains plug ethernet adapter , might simplify the wire run.

Whlst technically possible it may prove a bad idea from a sound quality perspective to start introducing all of the internet traffic 'noise' into the mains supply.

In theory yes, but in practice I could never hear any problems. I suspect that's mostly due to analogue power supplies being quite good low pass filters and switched mode supply noise being much bigger anyway before being filtered. The larger problem with ethernet over mains seems to be the mains noise can mess up the ethernet signal regularly. It took me a few years to wire cat5e over 3 floors but it was well worth it. I was trying to run multiple IP camera signals between 3 ethernet over mains adaptors, maybe that was just too much bandwidth and well buffered digital audio would cope better. But hardwiring will always tend to be so much better. Hugely more reliable and greater throughput.
