The SHD manual might not have anything about Airplay, but I have successfully used it and I just checked to verify with Overcast (my favorite podcast app).

Set SHD source to LAN, on Apple device tap the airplay icon in the app you want to Airplay stream (usually on the bottom of the screen) and Minidsp should appear as a choice. Tap on that and you are all set. Some folks like to go into the control center of the apple device where you can also select the airplay icon. Folks like that because they don't have to deal with the various different places apps put the icon.

Can you please comment on the AirPlay support of the SHD series? It is not advertised in the datasheet.

A quick google search indicates that Volumio "supports AirPlay by default". So ... is it a feature of the SHD???

I don't use Volumio and Airplay works for me. It looks indistinguishable from the AirPort Express I have plug into Toslink on the SHD.

I stated above that I don't use Volumio.

I forgot to mention that you do need to an initial setup in Volumio to set up Airplay.

Point to your NAS / Music Storage In Volumio:
Gear icon>My Music>Functionalities Controls>Shairport-Sync that will get you Airplay.

I had forgotten all about that setup which I did when I first got my SHD.

You can also set up UPNP as well in that window. That allows you to use software such as the very excellent Lumin App.

I know that the SHD does work via AirPlay. I was just looking for some type of "official" comment, as the features is not mentioned on the product page or datasheet.

I would not like to rely on this feature, if it is "unofficial", and might be stop working later in the MiniDSP customized build of Volumio.

I would say it does officially not support airplay.
I do see some probs which are pointing to this direction - very obvious.
(sometimes audio clicks when playing via airplay which means no proper clock syncing etc etc).

New devices on the market even need to be airplay 2 certified which is even a bit harder.

I guess you are right - it is not mentioned as a precaution as it is not really implemented in a "proper" way.

And Shairport-Sync is not really airplay - sorry.

I'm not sure if I'm the only to have strong distortions while listening through Airplay. Good luck to you! I tried to solve this unsuccessfully and minidsp support team is totally absent... no email reply, no forum reply...

To be fair to miniDSP, they did reply in that thread. To your complaint about not being able stream Tidal, you can just use the Volumio interface.

My bad, you're right. Totally absent is not the correct expression. Almost totally absent is.
Thanks john, but it's easier for me to connect a cable than to navigate the awkward Volumio interface... It's just not handy, implementation with Tidal is at a bare minimum and it takes too many clicks to stream anything in a satisfying way. It defies the whole purpose of going wireless and simplifying life.. And then, say you want to play something from your computer at a certain point while listening to tidal through volumio.. It just takes too much to switch mode.. Once one gets used to the comfort of Airplay or Roon integration, it's difficult to go back to clumsy retro web interfaces...

MiniDSP did not claim that the SHD is Airplay compatible - I would say it works by accident , somehow.

There are functions which are working nicely on volumio and others not.
The function will change over time (hopefully - as their are streaming devices out there which simply stop working as not maintained at all). I think it would be hard for the minidsp team to give fulll support for something where they have not developed the code.
Very similar to others using Volumio inside.

The minidsp parts of the system are in my opinion well maintained and also the support from them seems very good to me.

I couldn’t imagine keeping my SHD Studio if it didn’t support AirPlay, it’s a great feature and makes it highly usable without sacrificing the user interface/user experience of the apps on something like an iPad or iPhone

I am a new SHD owner and Airplay is important to me. This is what I have been able to ascertain:

Minidsp SHD does not support Airplay, but it does support Volumio.

Volumio does not support Airplay. Volumio provides an Airplay-like experience with Shareport which must be setup as I have described above.

In other threads that I have found about Airplay/Volumio/SHD, this seems to be the consensus. In fact, in this thread (see Post #39113 ) devteam said specifically that they don't use Airplay/Shareport.

airplay on the SHD Studio is my favourite feature ! I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise, you should try it sometime

Volumio does somehow support Airplay but I would not say it is the official implementation.
Some people reported problems with it - clicks audible or similar effects because of lacking clock adjustment.

It might be ok for you -- simply try yourself.
