The SHD app notes for "Using a NAS" says "Do not use Volumio for large libraries".
Is 1TB a large library? Is 100 GB a large library?
Is 100,000 files large? Is 10,000 files large?
Can you give a rough order of magnitude?

If I go a little below a "large" library how long should I wait for Volumio to read in (or update) the NAS folder that has the library? 2 hours? 8 hours? 24 hours?

On a different thread, john.reekie answered this and wrote

I just found this in the Volumio FAQ: "Is there a maximum number of tracks allowed in the music library?
There isn't a maximum number of tracks, but do be aware that indexing of very large collections (>10000) may take some time, especially on lower powered devices." volumio.github.io/docs/FAQs/Audio_Sources.html It's not clear whether this applies to locally mounted drives or NAS/remote or both.

My experience was that Volumio could not read in 6000 songs while trying for 4 hours.

Most likely you have other (non-audio) content in the folders that are being scanned. (That will "hang up" the scan.)
My NAS contains about 4000 tracks and Volumio will successfully scan it in just a few minutes.

I've been suffering with a similar issue for quite some time now. The scan starts, then after getting to ~6000 tracks it stops and the library is empty. While the scan is ongoing, I can play tracks so contact with the NAS is fine. Once the scan crashes I can no longer find any tracks to play.

It seems to be specific to the miniDSP distribution of Volumio. I have tried other versions of Volumio with my music library and they all work. I have even purchased another nanoPi Neo2 and used a distribution built for it without any problems. Too bad that distro does not have drivers for the SHD (no DAC or volume controls)

I have provided the dev-team with a specific song that crashes their scan, and they promised a fix. This was over a year ago: two more updates and the same problem continues! :-(

This makes the streaming portion of this otherwise excellent device useless! ... PLEASE FIX!

When I go to http://<IP address of my volumio>/dev, I get a rather lengthy log file. I noticed an error, so does anyone know what type of error is this:

"Failed to read mixer for 'alsa': no such mixer control: PCM"

Is this something that negatively affects the indexing service?
