Hello,

I'd like to purchase the SHD. It will replace my all-in-one preamp/DAC. However, I note that the user manual says wifi is not supported and that I must use an ethernet cable. I'm not able to use a modem in my music room so wanted to check to see if I can use the unit with the new Wi-DG adapter in place of using an ethernet cable?

Thank you,
Nick

FWIW I used an Airport Express for a while, on the off chance you have one lying around.

Hi John, thank you for your reply. I see I should have titled my post differently; about SHD internet connectivity. Unfortunately my Time Machine no longer works. I suppose an AirPort express might be found somewhere used. Are there not other solutions? A cable through my entry ain't going to work.

I'm unclear on whether the SHD needs connectivity to work. Your response tells me wireless connectivity does work under certain circumstances. I understand I would need connectivity for Volumo, but would need it for any other functions, or could it serve as my preamp/DAC/Dirac Live? I could continue with my Squeezebox in lieu of using Volumo, if necessary, though that doesn't seem optimal.

It seems my other option is to put a different product in my current chain and keep my preamp. Might you recommend that over trying to make the larger switch?

Yes, your thread title is hopeless ;) You only need network for Volumio. Anything that creates a wired network from a wireless network will (should) work. I might go down to the office store and see what they have. A USB Wifi dongle might work but they are not 100% certain (in my experience). HTH :)

Thank you, John. Wondering if you care to speculate on whether the MiniDSP folks might come out with a wireless version and if you think the units will be upgradable if they do so?

I see the rumors also about a ‘Dirac Live 2.0. Care to speculate about that or might three be a thread on the topic? I’ll go look but would appreciate your thoughts if you care to comment.

Meanwhile I imagine I would stream via USB or my squeezebox.

There were some threads about Dirac Live 2.0, comments from devteam in those are probably the most informative. No idea on wireless version. I think devteam said at one point they preferred to keep the WiFi out of the box. Anyway, I just picked up a used D-LINK DAP-1650 for cheap on eBay, it has a "Media Bridge" mode and four Ethernet ports, if it works as expected it can replace the Airport Express and a switch in my HT. I'll try it with the SHD as well.

Someone was asking about powerline adapters awhile back, not sure if that worked out or not. Personally I think I would prefer to avoid injecting more RF into my power lines.

Thank you for the links. They sure imply that current products would be upgradable rather needing to buy another if you wanted 2.0 when it was available in MiniDSP products.

Hi John, I was wondering about a different topic. Awhile back before I started a home remodel and decided to put off trying to implement DIrac Live the good folks at MiniDSP suggested a DDRC- 22 (now 24) to put in my system just before my outboard crossover that sits between my preamp (which has a DAC) and my amp. I was struggling with the idea of having two DACs in my system (I guess really three if I am playing my Squeezbox). I’m wondering if you think that is something I should not be concerned about? It is why I decided to wait for the SHD, thinking I would just replace my pre/DAC. But maybe the DDRC-24 would be just as good if I am unconcerned about Volumio? Or is that short-sighted?

Nic

I have a pair of the LInkwitz Labs Orion 3.3s. A multichannel amp powers each driver and there is an outboard ASP.

So the question is

DAC/preamp -> DDRC-24 -> ASP -> amps

vs

SHD -> ASP -> amps

?

Personally, given the information available, I think the latter makes more sense. I guess I don't really see much of an issue with volumio, there are ways to get a wifi signal into a wired one.

you can install a plugin in Volumio that will enable it to act as a squeezbox, so no change in server needed and control via squeezebox app as before

Juoiga, I have trouble with the app as it is unsupported on my Apple phone now. I’ll need to go to the forum to see how others are running the app. I e been using the remote.

Thank you for the note.
