This might be a dumb question but I'm curious about Spotify functionality on the SHD. Firstly, is it possible to cast to it from a phone when you have the SHD wired to the modem/router or do you use this volumio service somehow?

Secondly, I'm a pretty happy DDRC-24 owner but I'm currently using a Chromecast via Toslink to cast Spotify to my system and as some may be aware there are a few issues associated with doing that. For one the Chromecast doesn't stream at 320, instead it does 224 for some reason, this has been confirmed by Spotify, it is very strange. The other major issue is that when casting, Spotify limits playlists to 50 songs or so, meaning you pick a playlist with more songs and hit random for instance and you'll be able to listen to 50 random(ish) songs out of that playlist and then it'll repeat that set of 50 if you're on repeat or go to playlist radio if you're not. This casting exclusive issue is absolutely maddening and something that has existed with Spotify for years now without a fix from them. I can't seem to get USB audio to work for more than 2 minutes without losing sync otherwise I'd ditch the Chromecast even if I'd have to physically walk over to the laptop to operate the damn service.

Basically I'm hoping the SHD can be my saviour as Spotify otherwise is a convenient service. Plus it looks sweet, like a proper piece of gear that would fit nicely in with my system without having to hide it ;)

@Seb112233

Thanks for your interest to the SHD. In answer to your question,
- Yes, you can indeed cast from your phone. It will show as spotify connect with the plugin.
- Not sure what is the issue with the chromecast as unfortunately we have limited experience there. We're using SHD in our office, we're not aware of any issue.. Our playlist is a lot more than 50, no problem..

As you may know, there are two Spotify plugins available. One is the one by the Volumio team: you can use this one to operate Spotify from within Volumio, so to speak. I actually prefer the SpotifyConnect plugin--once installed, it allows you to use whatever you have been using for Spotify (computer, tablet, etc.) and to see Volumio as a device available to stream Spotify music to. Importantly, this second option gives me gapless playback from Spotify (essential for classical music), whereas the first doesn't.
