Jumper setting. 7 years 2 months ago #24043

Hi

I can`t seem to find out if I have to remove or use the jumpers on my Pwr-ice 125. I use an Nuprime DAC-9 as balanced preamp(XLR) and in the specifications is says it deliveres a max of 8V on the XLR output.

So right now I use it without the jumpers, and have to turn the volume up high to have normal listening SPL in my livingroom.

I use the modules in Bridge mode as an standart mono block . One on each side to my Carver AL3+ sepakers,

In the Manual to the Pwr-ice125 is says that the max balanced input with the jumpers is 2Vrms, and without the jumpers 8Vrms

So my question is, can I use the Nuprime with its 8V max out(XLR) with the jumpers in place on the DSP board(Pwr-ice125)

Hi

Been thinking doing the night and it strikes me that a normal Singelended signal is 2,2Vmax and Balanced is 4,4Vmax. Then why have the option to juse the jumpers with it`s 1Vmax/2Vmax..

Or is it me that have mixed things totally up?

I don't recall anything about input sensitivity jumpers, but mine are the first production. With that said, my question is: if you turn volume all the way up, is it louder than you ever want to play?

If the answer is yes, then I would leave it. If the answer is no, then change the jumpers (although I wonder about that).

The other way to look at is subjective. Some people think that turning the volume control past halfway is somehow straining something. Electronics doesn't work like that. However, if you feel that have the volume knob set lower is better than higher (for the same volume) then change the jumpers :)

Hi

I feels like the sound never gets "dynamickly alive" and with 450w thats weird. I played with a Quad Vena that with its 45w sounded more powerfull?!?!

The Icepower modules are geting way more hot than you can tuch with your bare hand. And i dont play especially loud.

Read page 10 in the manual and it says:

2.3.5 Analog Audio input sensitivity jumpers
The input sensitivity (Maximum level before saturation) of the module can easily be modified with jumpers to better fit your
equipment. Note that all changes must be performed with the amplifier OFF and jumpers of a channel must all be in the same state
(e.g. all 3 jumpers of channel 1 OPEN).

Oh look at that - mine do have jumpers...!

"I feels like the sound never gets "dynamickly alive" and with 450w thats weird. I played with a Quad Vena that with its 45w sounded more powerfull?!?!"

It sounds like you're describing the sound of the amp rather than any technical issue with gain structure. But, change the jumpers and see...

By the way... you are using the EQ in the amp, are you?

Hi

1. Thing. Its more than just the "sound" of the amplifier, it sounds like its "pushed" to more that it can hold up to.

2. Thing. No, I do not use the internal EQ. Im using it bridged from 20Hz to 20000Hz both 48db Bw and with the EQ flat and no ajustments. Both input and output is at 0(no Gain)

But i do not wanna try using the modules with jumpers in place if im destroying it with an overload in input voltage.
If following the manual the output voltage is way to high to it use the jumpers in place with the 2Vmax

And still i dont understand the option of the Jumpers as a normal Singelended signal is 2,2Vmax and Balanced is 4,4Vmax. Then why have the option to juse the jumpers with it`s 1Vmax/2Vmax..???

I guess that's just the way they do it. You will only "destroy" the amp if you overdrive it, at which time your speakers will have exploded or your ears will be bleeding. But anyway, I think I've run out of ignorable answers, good luck ;)

Hi

Im not worried of the Icepower modules, I`ts the DSP module that are restraind by the Jumper/Max input voltage.(If one follows the manual :) )

So can one of the MiniDSP crew please cast a "light" one this issue?

AND your questions are not ignorable, but constructive and helping to make a better "picture" of the issue/question. Thanks!!

@ Hans,

Let's start step by step here :- )
1) Which jumper you modified here? Please send us some screenshot of your setup. We've never seen before an amplifier "dying" of a simple jumper change. We're wondering what could be the issue here. Please share or start a tech support ticket (minidsp.desk.com)

2) PWR-ICE in bridge = 45W amplifier? mmmh, something we're most likely missing here in the gain structure. :-)
8Vrms out of a DAC is at 100% levels. The likelyhood that you're listening right now at 100% is very low, but maybe I'm wrong.. Most likely that you're listening at even 6dB less from 100% and we're talking 4Vrms.. High output level are to be looked at

3) As for the bridge output rating, please pay attention to the statement that 450W is for 4ohm and peak. What's your impedance here?
Datasheet of the amp here is: www.icepower.dk/files/solutions/icepower...eet_1_3_20151203.pdf

I still believe that it's worth to investigate the software/wiring of speaker to double check it's correctly configured. Please share that info (pics of wiring) + XML file loaded inside the unit. An Amp getting really hot and your statement that it's not even outputing 45w seems to imply it's incorrectly loaded or incorrectly wired. Just a wild guess. :-)

Hi

1.Thing: I have 2 pwr-ice125 modules. I testet yesterday evening and tryed to wire from the Icepower module on my working pwr-ice125 to the DSP module on the dead module. And it fired up!! Succes. And then tryed to wire the Icepower(from the dead one) to the DSP module on the good one, and now the DSP module dident work there. I tryed to switch the cabels, So the only solution is that its the AUX powersupply on the Icepower module thats defekt.. What are the odds? Really thougt is was due to the Jumper change.
SO: I can read/see that there are an 630mA fuse on the AUX powersupply, named F300 but it is no changeble. Again i read alot online, and found out its a known problem. But can it be fixed?. The module are only 1week old, so garanty? Or can it be "kickstarted"

2.Thing: It was not the Icepower module, but a Quad Vena I refered to regarding the 45w,("I played with a Quad Vena that with its 45w sounded more powerfull?!?!")
I have a sure insight in how the Data/amp works.

3.Thing : Everything is wired 100%.

I Tryed to listen Yesterday in mono with the jumpers in place = the sound was more vivid and a live, and the problems i refered to earlyer is goon.

Again I think the manual is misguiding with the specs.
.
And still i dont understand the option of the Jumpers as a normal Singelended signal is 2,2Vmax and Balanced is 4,4Vmax. Then why have the option to juse the jumpers with it`s 1Vmax/2Vmax..???

I understand the option when working with a very sensitive driver and a normal bass driver.

Thanks for the reply.

@ Hans,

Thanks for the feedback
1) Please get in touch with whoever sold you this module (we can't find a record under your last name). If it's under miniDSP.com, please contact minidsp.desk.com for our tech team to help. That sounds very odd and almost sound like a miswiring on the cable not fully inserted maybe.. Is the DSP module on? We've had very very low failure on the amplifier module itself. anyway, best to start a tech support ticket I think.

2) Yes we very much understood your statement that you're saying the PWR-ICE is "equivalent" to 45W amplifier (i.e.Quad Vena) . We're saying that something is most likely wrong if you're hearing/feeling so. We also understand that you're stating everything is wired 100% and no need for any of our help to review, however that's why we're here for, to help review. :-)
So please help us, and send us what we asked above so we can help
a) a picture of how you wired the amp to speakers.
b) your configuration file that is loaded now inside the amp (File - > Save)
In 99% of cases, we can indeed see what could be the issue. Sounds good?

3) Jumpers: on the user manual it's the correct writing. Are you talking of something else here?
maybe send us a link? We can take it from there? Thanks.

Hi

I bought it via the German distrubitor O-Audio, and they have an awsome service, so no problems there. And I will contact them.

Sorry if my reply sounded a littel "short", It was before me morning coffee = And after my first cup of morning Coffee  And second cup ;)

The problem is that the DSP module have no lights/dosent start. But I tryed To wire the DSP module to my other pwr-ice125 and there it works perfect. And the otherway around, took the DSP module from the working pwr-ice125 and connected is to the defect pwr-ice125 and her it diden`t work. And have tryed to switch the cabel set between the 2 modules with no luck, so no other solution than the one Icepower module has a faulty AUX power supply.

What I ment by a known problem was reffering to the Icepower 125ASX2 module alone, not the complete PWR-ICE125. (here I have not heard anothing negative, but only good feedback)

The Picture shows how the speaker out is wired. I have some of the original clips to use in the white connector,
therefore the upgraded cable. I use Red as positive+ and White as negative-

How do I start a tech support ticket?

Regarding to the manual, im just wondering how it is possible to use my preamp with its 8Vmax output/XLR(And still when i only play 50% its way over the stated max.) When is says 2Vmax input/XLR, it strikes me that the Vmax values with the jumpers in place are lower than the marked standart output of most devices..

Thanks for the great service and fast reply.
