I am still confused about EDID: Does the NanoAvr signal an EDID to the HDMI INPUT? The manual says the setting within the NanoAVR is only for the HDMI output.
I am asking, because I lost my NanoAVR HDA-DL (HDA modified for Dirac) output for half a day yesterday. I experimented with feeding the HDMI INPUT 2 with my PC´s HDMI signal and eventually arrived at a stage where the analog output went dead for all inputs. I only use the analog outputs and the HDMI out is empty in my configuration. I feed the NanoAVR with an OPPO 103. It still found the NanoAVR but only as a video device and would not send Audio to it (“NO AUDIO”). It would do that happily for other devices. I re-loaded the DSP software into the NanoAVR and changed the HDMI EDID setting to all choices, created an empty DIRAC slot, rebooted everything twice – no change.
Only after I connected a true HDMI device with a real EDID to the HDMI OUT of the NANOAVR did the Oppo recognize the NanoAVR and did send Audio again and all is fine since then, even after leaving HDMI our blank again.
In the past, my PC would not recognize the NanoAVR as an HDMI device and would not send anything to it. Since my forced HDMI-OUT EDID experiment yesterday, it does. Even after the HDMI out was disconnected again.
Is that a known bug, i.e. the NanoAVR occasionally forgetting what type of device it is and then keeping a “forced” setting until something else comes along??

The edid management of the nano avr hda is a joke.

From my experiments, it tries to read the edid information from the device, alters it with its own audio channel information, and send that back to the input device. The bad thing is that in the process, the edid may be altered, invalidaed, or anything weird and buggy which prevent correct operation of the device (i ended up saving a working edid in a file, and forcing it in my pc - other people reported using edid hardware devices to make this work).

Given how it works, they could have included some default edid profiles, which could be selected and sent unconditionnaly, whether there is a physical device connected to the output or not. But they did not. Since the product is now discontinued, it is really unlikely that we see such feature (which could be just a firmware update). It's sad (just like the « no source1 / source2 ir command…), because outside that the nano avr is a great product.

Hello,

...outside that the nano avr is a great product.

Maybe, but the HDA version is not, due to it's DAC and/or the bad implementation. It is really noisy.

Cheers, Tiki

I spent a couple of hours to find out how to connect my Raspberry 4 with Volumio to the NanoAvr´s second HDMI port and hear something! The NonoAVR´s Edid is so screwed up that that the R4 would default to an audio-less hdmi output in VGA mode. The classical switches like
dtparam=audio=on
audio_pwm_mode=2
hdmi_drive=2
hdmi_force_edid_audio=1
did not help. The only solution was, to force the R4 to a 1080p60htz mode:
hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
hdmi_drive=2
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=16

It is a challenge, this NanoAVR..., but a nice one.

I believe too that it is a great product. Not as an 8 chn DAC (btw, there are not many...), but as a DRC component with Dirac. I believe that, after it does it´s Dirac thing, the DAC does hardly matter anymore, as the full frequency & impulse is manipulated anyway. And one can always stick a 8ch DAC after it (I do not think there is a better one below 1000€.....).
Sure, my Parasound DAC2000 sounds better, and I lift 2channels out of the NanoAVR´s 8ch HDMI output for 2 ch music. But considering that that DAC2000 is a serious piece of equipment, the NanoAVR still does a decent job. It is similar, or slightly better, than the Oppo103 (still waiting for an Oppo 105 with a dead drive as a bargain...

Well, i'm happily using it plugged to a 8x50W power amplifier. Either your unit is defective, or your power amplifier is too powerful (more power means lower output from the nanoavr, and with unbalanced outputs it may means more noise…). The hard part with the nano avr is making it work.
