I have a basic question that I have not been able to find a clear answer for.

Does the NanoAVR generate its own EDID as a multi-channel audio sink or does it depend on the EDID provided by whatever is attached to its HDMI out (and thus require something with multi-channel capability associated with it)?

I would like to use the device as an audio device only connected by HDMI to a HTPC and have the HTPC recognize it as a multi-channel capable audio device not as just stereo.

Most likely the HDMI HTPC driver that is declaring the interface as multichannel driver. We're just carrying this over.
See the user manual, we explain the different modes to hard code the channel count. We explain all this in detail on p29
