For now when I am using a HTPC as the only source I am using a DSP in windows. Therefor I am using the nanoavr HDA as a multichannel DAC and volume control.

To prevent the windows-based DSP from clipping I have had to reduce its overall gain on all channels. This makes the fact that the nanoavr HDA doesn't go over 0 dB a limitation on certain material recorded on a lower level.

At what level does the nanoavr HDA start clipping? Can put all the levels on +12 dB, or will it then clip in the digital domain?

The answer is that it "depends"... :-)
Feed a -20dBFS signal into a nanoAVR that has the levels at +12 (-20 + 12 = -8dB FS headroom).
Feed a 0dBFS into a nanoAVR with +12dBFS, yes it will saturate. :-)

Makes sense?
Overall, you shouldn't need to boost the signal. It's not a good idea overall. Use your amp for that. That's what it is for, to amplify signals. :-)
