Hi devteam and everyone!

I am using the Nvidia Shield Android TV to stream and watch all my media at home, currently hooked to a 1080p HDMI receiver & TV.

This thing

Will the nanoAVR receive 8-channel 24-bit LPCM from it when playing multi-channel sources like Netflix (DD+ 5.1 on most movies), Google Play Movies (DD+5.1) or HBO Nordic (DD+6.1 in WestWorld), with its current firmware?

Thanks!
Calibrate all the things :)

I'm working on an Android app for the IL-DSP.
It's available in the Play Store
And there's a support and discussion forum for it

I'm also interested in this topic, it would be nice to have a list of player capable of transcoding DD and DTS to LPCM.

@ supercurio
Isn't the Shield a 4k device? i.e. HDMI 2.0?
The nanoAVR is only HDMI 1.4 so that could be an issue I think...

Support for PCM output is really depending in the hardware. Best that you ask Nvidia staff directly if they can output 8ch PCM out. That's the question as some of these boxes don't always do.

HDA works just fine with the 2017 Shield TV.

Shield Settings >Display & Sound > Advance settings > HDMI 5.1 Audio > ON
This will enable bitstream decoding to multichannel PCM.

In Kodi disable bitstream passthrough. Now Kodi will decode DD, DD+, DTS, TrueHD and DTS HD to multichannel PCM.

Shield Settings >Display & Sound > Advance settings > HDMI 5.1 Audio > ON
This will enable bitstream decoding to multichannel PCM.

Sorry but this was wrong information. After further testing I got this feedback from Nvidia support:

"Here is the update from the engineering team.

The SHIELD doesn't have bitstream decoding to PCM capability for DD+.

With regards to the “Settings ->Display & Sound -> Advance settings -> HDMI 5.1 Audio”, when enabled, all the stereo (2-channel) streams are up-mixed to 5.1 channel and played as multi-channel streams.

This is not related to any pass-thru formats, that is DD/DD+/DTS etc.
And we don’t support decoding of DD/DD+/DTS on ShieldTV, only have support for pass-thru of these formats.

Yes, Apple TV 4 works just fine: Settings > Audio and Video > Surround Sound and choose Best Quality Available

Kodi 17 running on Shield also is capable of decoding bitstream audio to multichannel PCM. It comes with its own software decoder.
Netflix, VUDU and Amazon Video don't have their own bitsream decoder and the current Shield OS doesn't provide it either.

Guess decoders won't be an integral part of future apps or operating systems. Bitstream decoding has to be provided by the audio processor ;)

Using a Nanoavr DL w/ my Shield TV (2015 version) with latest updates as of Oct. 2017.
Works flawlessly now w/ LPCM 5.1 or 7.1 out and can use the NanoAVR DL inline with it to my Oppo-205 HDMI in. Was using an Apple TV 4, but now am preferring the Shield TV in terms of audio. YMMV

@enser

Curious on feedback! THanks for keeping this thread alive for others.
Are you able to stream multichannel audio or not? Based on above reply from Nvidia tech support, they mentioned that only stereo was supported?

Hello,

I have a shield and my test result are :
- Kodi : software decode by Kodi of evry format to multichannel LPCM. Works great.
- Netflix : no way to have LPCM output. Neither netflix nor the shield decode the DD+ to LPCM.

For NetFlix and BluRay I use my goold old Playstation 3, fat version. The PS3 decode the bitstream (DD+ for netflix) and send multichannel LPCM. Sadly netflix is relatively slow on PS3.

Indeed I have read reports that the apple TV 4K decode every format and send LPCM ... but I haven't test it by myself ... Mostly because it seems that installing Kodi on apple TV is not "straight forward" ....

Regards,
