I recently got a Roku and when I connected it nanoAVR, it thinks, as if its connected to a Stereo source. I used to have the same issue with my HTPC as well but after I configured the PEQ on INPUT #1, it got resolved.

Now my setup is:

HTPC -->| |
| nano | --> Denon AVR
Roku --->| |

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Hi, does the Roku support multichannel linear PCM output?

@ walzen

A good question from John. Make sure that the Roku is able to output multichannel PCM. Not sure how you configure this..

Sadly, it only supports PCM in Stereo, which explains the whole thing.

Thanks

Is this a Roku 3? Have you tried different - Settings > Audio > HDMI like Auto detect, Dolby D or Dolby D+ and then playing a Netflix 5.1 program?

I'm thinking about getting a miniDSP AVR-HD and have the same setup as yours, HTPC and a Roku 3.

Thanks

Selecting 'Auto Detect' definitely does not work. Netflix will not show you '5.1' icon next to the movie title.

Setting either to DD or DD+, I didn't try, as usually the source media dictates it. But its a good test point.

The problem is,since Roku only supports PCM Stereo, its telling Netflix, the same, so Netflix wont even stream a multichannel audio stream.

Very annoying.

Actually I was considering the nanoAVR DL but it makes me wonder if even a Blu-Ray player like the Samsung BD-J7500 will output LPCM for Netflix 5.1. I can't even get LPCM out for Windows Media center (live/recorded TV) (Intel HDMI Audio).

I had an Oppo BD-103 and that thing was garbage for decoding Netflix DD+, after a skip or rewind it would take like 6-15 seconds to decode before audio would return that is if it decoded at all and sometimes it would pop crazy loud during decoding, enough to put my amps into shutdown.

I really wanted to try out Dirac Live but I guess I'll just stick with Audyssey for now or maybe bite the bullet and get an XMC-1.

My BDP-103 has been rock-solid for Netflix - in fact we hardly ever put discs in it any more! :lol: :lol: Yes, that's going into a nanoAVR (2 actually, DL followed by HDA).

It's actually pretty simple, I don't know why the grumbling here. Just check the specs of the source device to see if it supports multichannel LPCM output.

I have no idea what the current generation Roku does but the new Apple TV will do it. I'm wondering if there's some sort of swing against these proprietary protocols.

My problems with the Oppo started with the built in Netflix app which decoded fine but kept logging me out of Netflix once a week or so (and this was after the supposed firmware fix). The decoding issues started when I plugged a Roku 3 into it. Tried three different Roku's same problem, tried nothing but the Oppo, Roku, and a 5 channel Outlaw amp, same problem. My Denon 4100 has no such issues with the Roku..

I've never been logged out of Netflix.

What does the Roku give you that you don't already have in the BDP-103? (Just curious.)

Quick question, when you first open the Oppo Netflix app is the background red or black?

Oppo would never update the Netflix app, it still had the red background splash/loading screen, maybe they have by now

But to answer your question:
The Roku never logs me out of Netflix
With the Denon I have no audio issues with Netflix 5.1
The Roku has the latest Netflix app version
The Roku has FXNow (The Simpsons) :lol:

It's RED. (With the netflix logo). Then it goes to the profiles and has a black background. No good?

:huh:

That's the old app... still. Oppo told me they didn't need to update the app because all the newer app offered was something unneeded or that the Oppo didn't support, I can't remember exactly what their excuse was. But what Oppo doesn't understand or chooses to ignore is that Netflix probably doesn't make publicly available a changelog of some improvements or every bug fix with each app update.

One example that I bet the Oppo app doesn't support (and I could be wrong) is the so called improvement "Auto-Play" which plays the next episode of a series automatically, luckily you can turn that off.

This was back from 11/13/2013 - Netflix Just Made A Big Change

So that red background app is pretty old.

I watched a bit of the video, the woman is talking about a grey background? It would probably al be easier if there were a way to just see a version number (is there?)

On my BDP it does do auto play where it goes onto the next episode unless you tell it otherwise. I think I'm now going to go find the setting to turn that off.... :D
