Hi, i'm contemplating the AVR HDA and have 1 concern. I have an Xbox 360 and over HDMI it can only output 2 channel pcm or 5.1 bit stream. So it occurred to me I could use the 8×8 plugin to simulate surround from those 2 change sources.

Would this be possible?

Hi, i think the answer to your question is "it depends." If you want to do something like Dolby Prologic decoding, you can't do that. If you want to just send content from the front left and right to the surround speakers, you can do that. For example, you could route the front left to the surround left at say, -6 dB, the same for the right, and that would give you a sort of surround effect. It's not "proper" surround sound by any means, but would give you some signal to the surrounds when playing music, but something like surround sound effects wouldn't work.

Very good answer from John already. You can't reproduce Prologic because it involves phase at crosspoints but you can do some level based routing though thanks to the matrix mixed.
