using nanoAVR after a pre-pro 8 years 3 weeks ago #20912

I know this isn't the recommended configuration, but is there anything preventing connecting a nanoAVR-HDA between a pre-pro and external power amps. In this case, the pre-pro would have to have two HDMI outputs, one for the video path, and one that goes to the nanoAVR.

There are several reasons why I would like to do this. First it puts bass management upstream of the nanoAVR. Second it avoids an extra D/A-to-A/D conversion and the associated cabling. Third, it should be a cheaper solution and smaller form factor.

Now, what I'm really after is Dirac. Since the nanoAVR-DLA isn't available yet, can I get a nanoAVR-HDA and upgrade it with Dirac, OR, a nanoAVR-HD and upgrade it with analog outputs and Dirac? I know the recommended product for this configuration is the DDRC-88A, but if possible, I'd rather go the nanoAVR route for the reasons I gave above (except that BM works out the same I guess).

Thanks,
Darrell

Hi Darrel, I'll have a shot at answering some of your questions.

I don't see any reason why not, as it would be essentially the same as my setup where I have one HDMI output from my BDP-103 directly to the TV and the second HDMI output into the nanoAVR for the audio path. The pre-pro will give you additional inputs. However, one caution here: you will want to check carefully what exactly comes out the pre-pro HDMI outputs, as it might not be the same as the analog outputs. (My thought being that the pre-pro manufacturer assumes that its HDMI outputs are for video and the audio path is going out via the analog outputs. If you could suggest a specific model of pre-pro perhaps we could look at it.)

My second comment there is I'm not sure why you want to do bass management upstream of the nanoAVR HDA, its bass management is very flexible.

@john.reekie
When will nanoAVR DLA be announced?

Hi, they announced it at CES earlier this year, but as to when they will be releasing it (?), I have no idea. miniDSP usually don't say much about products in advance, but maybe @devteam (the miniDSP rep) will see your question here.
