Low Ouput Volume on nanoAVR DL with new firmware 8 years 7 months ago #17811

After updating to the newest version of the firmware, nanoAVR DL programmer, and DLCT for my nanoAVR DL, I've noticed that output volume in my nanoAVR is significantly lower. I have the output volume in the nanoAVR set to maximum, and I have to raise the volume on my surround sound processor much higher to achieve the same loudness as before the update. I also noticed that I had to increase the output volume much higher when running the Dirac Live test signals than before the update. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Is there a solution/fix in the future?

Hello Matthew,

We already provided some comments on our tech support ticket. So please use that one path of communication. Thanks very much for your understanding.
Our guess is that after doing the firmware upgrade, most likely you didn't rerun the measurements. Please use "one" communication path if that's not the case. Thanks!

Matty,
Was the issue fixed after you re-calibrated?

No, it was not fixed, and will not be anytime soon (if ever). The output from the nanoAVR DL seems to be about 6 dB lower than before the update. The 6 dB attenuation, according to the email I received from miniDSP, is intentional and recommended by the Dirac engineers. This may or may not be a problem in your particular situation. I will need to find a way to get those 6 dBs back (perhaps by increasing the gain on my power amplifiers).

However, I absolutely LOVE my nanoAVR DL and what Dirac is capable of doing. My system has never sounded better! I will find a solution to the lower output volume. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the product and the support I've received from miniDSP thus far.

@ matty1137,

Thanks for sharing with the community your findings. We can indeed approve that there will be a minor attenuation (6dB), here for the good of all of you. :-)
We're using it to allow you to get more headroom internally so you can add more filters..

We're certainly glad to hear that you're having fun with your unit! We look forward to seeing some pics of your setup in the showcase section.

Just curious how does additional headroom allow one to "add more filters"?

@ Markus,

We're missing a word in that sentence. :-)
Not exactly to "add more filters" but to "add more gain to your filters" = "the DSP has more headroom to boost the signal internally".
