Hello
I am interested in using a Nano AVR for the purpose of creating a 3 way active speaker system with the possibility of equalization and delay to all speakers. Here is my idea. The HDMI has 8 audio inputs for a 7.1 surround system. I would rather use the receiver for an active 3 way speaker system with subwoofer. I would use the front speaker outputs to my tweeters, the rear left and right surrounds to feed my midrange speakers. Then I would use my right and left rear speaker outputs to feed my woofers. I could also use the subwoofer output for additional subwoofers if I choose to. In the configuration I would steer everything to the right and left front channels and a mono signal to the subs. My question is will a pro logic receiver adapt to these settings. All the channels would have to be set for full range with no bass steering. This would be so cool. To run your active speaker system all you would need is a Nano AVR and a 7.1 receiver . Does anyone see this not working? Would the HDMI video be interfered with? Would there be any problem with the HDMI handshake?

Thanking you in advance

Jim the Oldbie is using one that way - see his "full gonzo" thread

Hi John,

I can verify that it is indeed possible to do what you're describing. In my case I am having second thoughts about the power amp stages in my low-budget receivers sounding good enough, but then again I'm trying to build an active 5.1 setup with 2 receivers (and 2 nanoAVRs). If you plan to stick to 2-channel, you could spend some more on a single higher-quality receiver with a better output section, and probably get some very nice results.

Thank you very much for the info. I have been actually looking at more of a higher quality-bang for the buck type pre/pro that is known for good sound. The Outlaw model 975 for a great price of $550.

This preamp could be mated to any class D/T/Tube/A-B amp that you want. I will be using a compression driver for the tweeter and will probably use a T-amp or single ended tube amp. For the mid woof I will probably use a higher powered class D amp so it can keep up with the compression driver. I will be using a high efficiency super tweeter and will use a T-amp on that. Then I can add as many subs as I want with large class D plate amps. These different amps can be purchased for really good prices.

That sounds like a good choice to me. I've been pleased with the Outlaw stuff; used an ICBM for many years before I was bitten by the DSP bug. More recently I bought a 7075 amplifier which I also like a lot.

I think my solution will also be the pre/pro route. I've already modified one of my Yamaha receivers for preamp outputs (the front ends on these are actually pretty decent), and will be doing the same to the other one as soon as I get some free time. I've also ordered a second Outlaw 7075 (they are selling refurbs on Ebay with full 5-yr warranties + free shipping for $499), to solve the power problem.

Good luck, and let us know how it works out,
