Any issue upgrading from Flex TRS to Flex Eight with connections to my XLR amp? 2 months 6 days ago #66302

Hi,  I have been enjoying my Flex TRS as electronic cross-over for 2 way speakers I built.  My next project is a 3-way design, so thinking to move up to a Flex eight.  I see the Eight is only available in unbalanced RCA connectors that output 2V.  Are there any issues or consequences I will experience to moving from balanced 4V TRS connections to my XLR amps to the RCA connections?  I see there are lots of adapter cables and socket converters available for XLR to RCA.

Thanks for your guidance!

Excellent question, I have the same.  I currently have the Flex TRS with 2-way DIY speakers.  My next project is a 3-way design, I have Hypex amps from VTV that have XLR inputs and would like to know if there is any significant consequences to moving to the Flex 8?

No real issues when sending an RCA to XLR in aside from the signal will remain unbalanced.  So, if currently using XLR to XLR and then going to RCA to XLR (or XLR to RCA), you'll note about a 6 dB drop (which can be offset by turning the volume up).  You'll also lose the noise reduction benefit of XLR to XLR, although might not be a big loss depending on cable length. Alternately, there are devices that will "match" the levels -- e.g. Henry Engineering makes a couple of different ones, as well as some others.

Thank you Madrac. This is very helpful.  The cable length would  be quite short, less than 2 feet.  I looked at Henry Engineering Levelers, but seems like I would need four of these units for all eight RCA outputs on the Flex Eight which is impractical.  Orchard Audio also sells 2X2 RCA to XLR converters, but they're $200 each and would need four as well.  Likely eight RCA to XLR cables is the most straight forward and cost effective solution, understanding that the voltage drop will require more gain from the Flex Eight.
