I have a Minidsp Flex rca version and I wonder if there is any difference in the sound between usb, coax or toslink input?

I have tested my fanless pc (usb) and a WiiM Pro (coax) and there was more different in the sound than what a thought.

I suspect it depends a great deal on what you are attaching to the Flex. My own experience is that I have failed to detect a significant/any difference among the various inputs, but YMMV.

My fanless nuc sounds better thru usb than my WiiM Pro thru coax cable both using roon.

Hard to say whether that is because of the inputs or because of differences between the NUC and the WiiM.

I recently had my Flex 8 set up with 2 different R-Pi based streamers connected, one via Toslink and the other via coax, plus my PC acting as a third source via USB, and had a hard job detecting any differences in sound quality.

Strange, I have problems believing that one "streamer" is better than another "streamer" so my only answer would be that usb is better than coaxial on Flex.

You need to do some controlled tests! Preferably ones where only one variable changes.

The video below may be of interest in terms of discussing some technical reasons that you might notice real differences. I've never tried comparing any digital sources connected to miniDSPs myself though.

@HoJ76
You can use the Flex to capture the input and pass thru the usb to the PC. This way you can compare the streams the DAC receives after ASRC is done.
Technically usb input is going to deliver better performance as the stream is clocked with the DAC clock, and the Flex in not very good to handle the jitter of incoming spdif stream IMO.

So this may be why the usb from pc sounds better than coaxial from WiiM Pro in my system?

I don't think so. There are measurable differences, but I doubt it can be audible. The WiiM Pro is quite good on its digital output regarding the digital stream. BTW, did you check the toslink output also?

You've mentioned Roon, was your test made with Roon Ready FW on the Pro over RAAT protocol?

And being bit-perfect on the WiiM side achieved, ie. no EQ, 100% volume etc?
Making a test with toslink output is crucial. For example the WiiM coax output is not isolated galvanically afaik.
