Using biquad data from Flex with Dirac to set Filters, etc on 2X4HD 2 months 2 weeks ago #66117

I intend to purchase one FLEX with Dirac for subwoofer integration and LF room correction, and one plain-Jane 2X4HD as an active crossover for a pair of home-brew two way speaker systems. I do NOT want to pay for TWO Flexes or a DDRC.
-How do I use a Flex w/ Dirac automation to test the speaker response, generate biquads coefficients, optimize crossover freq/slope/phase, etc, then load all of that data into the 2X4HD?
-Can this be done without using REW?
-Will the Flex automatically generate a file that I can cut and paste into the 2X4HD via the Device Console or the Biquad Calculation Spreadsheet?

I'm afraid this isn't possible. Even with two miniDSPs with Dirac Live you'd still want to be optimising crossovers manually using measurements made with REW.

Thank you Ultrasonic.
If I understand correctly, there is no such thing as "automatic" crossover implementation/optimization. However, can at least the room correction data from a D/L equipped Flex be migrated to a 2X4HD?

Sorry but no. On miniDSPs with Dirac Live capability there are two entirely separate filter blocks: one for the Dirac Live filters and another for the biquad PEQ filters that the user has manual control of. The Dirac filters cannot be transferred to another miniDSP, even if it has a Dirac Live licence. The filters are tied to the device serial number.

However, there is no need to have the Dirac Live filters on more than one device. You basically have two unrelated configurations here. The first would be a miniDSP acting as crossover in a pair of two-way active speakers. You would need to set up its crossovers manually but how you do so doesn't relate to do the room they'll be in. Then you'd have a second miniDSP (with Dirac Live) that is used both to integrate your active speakers with your subs, and to provide Dirac Live room correction. The following application note give you one way of doing this second part.

I'm afraid not, as Ultrasonic has said.

Part of the problem here is the "room correction" terminology, which is misleading. Dirac doesn't produce a room correction; it produces a correction for the whole system; from the source through the crossover/PEQ settings in the miniDSP, through the amplification stage(s) that you are using, through the speakers themselves, to the room (and not forgetting the contribution of any fancy interconnects and cables, if you believe that there is such a contribution). So there is no way that you could ever disentangle what are the correction factors specific to the room from correction factors that are to do with the response of all the other components in the chain. So even if it were possible to transfer the Dirac filters from one setup to another (which it isn't) it would be a meaningless thing to do.
