I did a search for this topic and didn't find anything.

I am interested in the volume control on the Flex 8. I would like analog volume control rather than digital. Is the volume (big front knob) on the Flex 8 analog or digital? Digital is fine, but I would have to add an analog outboard.

You're going to add an eight-channel outboard analog volume control??

The Flex 8 volume control is digital.

Basically it is two four-channel 10K audio-taper pots from Bourns, cost $3.75 each from Digikey. I might add a tube or jfet buffer.

In revisions, I hope that MiniDSP will add analog volume control before output buffers, similar to that used on the AudioQuest Dragonfly DACs. These are available in SMD IC form.

What makes you so certain that this addition would be an improvement over the current situation? I'm not at all confident it would be.

I think there's zero chance of that happening.  That would be taking a step backward in the implementation.

It was popular to use multi-channel analog volume controls post-DSP for some of the DSP platforms......about twenty years ago.  :)  Indeed, my old Behringer DCX is still set up that way using a SSM2018 VCA scheme.
However, this is no longer necessary with current DSP platforms since there is (effectively) no resolution loss using a digital volume control.

I guess you could use an AV Reciever with adequate in & outs to get an analogue volume control.

That would be a solution in search of a problem.
AVR receivers are a real can of worms for this sort of thing.  A lot of variables.
