Nonetheless, it would be nice if this behavior can be disabled. Does anybody know if it is possible to configure flex so that it does not get turned on automatically?

Unfortunately we don't have the ability to remove/change that behavior.. We have the SHD starting in standby mode. Most people want the opposite.
Nothing we can do to please everybody.. :-(
