Hi.
I've really been enjoying my Flex, and it's made a huge difference to my music.  I've listed below a couple of requests which I hope you guys can incorporate into a future firmware update:
  • More than 4 presets.  I find 4 presets very limiting, particularly as it is so easy and so much fun trying out different presets.
  • Ability to customise preset names as they are displayed on the Flex screen.  There may only be 8 characters available for preset names, but it would be very helpful if we could name or abbreviate them as we like.
I'm very happy for others to chime in with their suggestions and look forward to some feedback from @devteam
Thanks.
P.

I personally don't need more than 4 presets although custom naming would be a nice touch.

-What I would love to see is the ability for set default input per preset. For example, in my system it would be great if Preset 1 was set to Toslink, Preset 2 to 'USB', etc.

4 presets has been fine for me so far, most of the time I only use one once I've settled on a config, but more is useful when the config is under development.

The default input is a useful idea. Similarly, it would be useful to have a different master volume setting saved for each preset.

Any update MiniDSP? It would be so great to have the ability to have Inputs "locked" to presets. Imagine being able to hit "Preset 2" and that takes me to my Analog Input phono stage while Preset 1 is set to Toslink. Would also help some of us that use in a 2-ch Hifi/Home Theater hybrid setup as i could program the IR codes for these presets to make input switching with my smarthome a lot easier. I have a Homebridge IR blaster so I can control the MiniDSP from any of my iOS devices or scenes.

Just to help manage expectations I'll mention that the same suggestion as yours has been made by others using different miniDSP models for many years. My guess is this sort of change is not easy to make.

For what it's worth I think the best implementation would be an option that going to a particular input caused a chosen default preset to be selected, rather than choosing a preset leading to an input being chosen.

It is possible if you use for example a raspberry pi streamer. Like volumio maybe.

Commandline Control / HTTP Api

You could monitor which input is choosen and set the preset you like to link to it. Same for volume.

I don't know if someone did already work on this.
That's of course very advanced to get this to work.

I'm workin on a volumio plugin for the SHD to get default volume and preset by input. It pretty much works but we're testing. devTeam seems to be occupied with a new release or something like that at the moment.

Wow this is really an interesting idea as I have a macmini running as a Roon Endpoint and that also handles my HomeBridge needs.

I will dig into this tomorrow! Thanks

I'd guess that the wider roll out of Device Control is probably their main focus right now. I do think what you're working on sounds really good though and is something I'd make use of it it were rolled out  . (Although of course this won't help Flex owners.)

Well, if a flex user uses a volumio streamer which is connected by USB I probably could check out if I could add the minidsp-rs as replacement for the serial port connection (which is used in the SHD).

But minidsp probably won't like this idea, because they would kind of loose the selling benefit of the SHD. But it would give the other minidsp devices a real benefit.

With this solution you could connect any minidsp by USB to a volumio streamer and handle preset/inputs/volume by volumio and than of course use every plugin available for the SHD.

As I'm sure you're aware the version of Volumio on the SHD series is not one available for wider install on other devices, and I'm pretty confident it would breach the licence agreement if it were (and of course it may not work on non-miniDSP hardware).

I'll also be honest that if I were using an external streamer I wouldn't be choosing Volumio. I use it as it's what's on my SHD but I know it can be bettered.

That has nothing in particular to do with the volumio version on the SHD.
What I meant was just a plugin which is using minidsp-rs to connect to the minidsp device via usb.

There is just one plugin in the special built volumio version of the SHD which seems to control the SHD DSP Unit. It is licensed by ISC and built by VolumioTeam. This plugin uses a serial port to communicate to the dsp board. And soundwise there is a i2s connection between the streamer board and the dsp board.

In a normal volumio installation on lets say a raspberry pi you would connect the minidsp by usb and with the plugin from the SHD modified to use minidsp-rs instead of the serial port you probably could control any minidsp over a normal volumio installation like you can on the SHD.

I don't prefer volumio either but therefor I forked a squeezelite plugin to work on the SHD quite well.

Anyways. This would take some time to get it done and since I don't have a flex or another minidsp I won't spend my freetime on this.
But if there's a programmer interested in doing that I could give a headstart with how this could be done.

I don't think there would be any licensing problem. But this could easily be checked with minidsp I think.
I think the benefit for them would be bigger than any licensing wins.
How many times does some people in this forum complain about how to control the minidsp....

Sorry to be thick but what is 'minidsp-rs'? Generally if you had an external streamer you'd just be sending an audio signal to the USB input on a miniDSP but here you're talking about something more. (I'm asking to learn here.)

The minDSP-specific Volumio build also differs in terms of including Qobuz and Tidal support without requiring the user to pay an ongoing subscription. This was in part where I was coming from re. licensing.

Well you can't have it all for nothin :-D
minidsp-rs is a small program or commandline tool to manage minidsp devices via usb connection.

minidsp-rs

So you could at least use the free stuff and manage your minidsp with this.
Anyway - this was just one possible way how you could control a minidsp (or nearly any minidsp) with a nice UI like with the SHD from let's say your Smartphone (volumio app).
