So, we have to choose balanced Flex 4 or non balanced Flex 8.

I will investigate how well the Crown Macro Tech 5002 work with non balanced lower voltage signals...

Isn’t that beast 2000W into 4 ohms and variable input sensitive?

should go fine with 1.4V sensitivity setting 

my amps only do 400W/4ohms with fixed 26dB gain, so a standard 2V output from unbalanced is just right.

I'm also hoping for a FLEX 2x8 balanced and is very much in doubt on whether to wait or shift to unbalanced .

On the FLEX 2x4, it seems that the main board is the same for all versions, and there is a separate breakout board for each connector-version ( analog, digital and balanced) , so would that also be an option for the FLEX 2x8? Even if there is no room for TRS connectors there should be plenty room for Phoenix connectors.

I'm surprised that miniDSP will not do a balanced version as they have the chassis for it, knowledge and the need seems to be there too.  My Motu Ultralite Mk5 is a stellar piece so there is no need to switch to an unbalanced version.

Yeah, you have the DSP capabilities elsewhere in your system.  So, you have no need for a platform like this.
As I said, apples and oranges.  This shouldn't be difficult to grasp.

Not apples/oranges if one is just using it as an 8 CH DAC without the extra Dirac cost package.  

Why in the world would somebody use the Flex as just an eight-channel DAC?????

Hi Jason and Dave. I do like both apples and oranges. And I think we’re both on the same page except different paragraphs. Both methods enable crossover and equalisation and playback from digital sources. Since the 4 x 10 HD has been out of stock,In fact I have a Okto DAC 8 pro and Motu ultralight Mark five on order and have been waiting patiently for months. Waiting patiently to see who would ship first . As soon as miniDSP announced this two in eight out crossover equaliser DSP with the Dirac I cancelled the other two.

If one has already got a PC based crossover there would be little reason to swap however from a clean slate I would much prefer the mini DSP as an off-the-shelf option. In fact I would prefer something from Stream Unlimited or Eleven Engineering but they are not available without an NDA or MOQ. 

I only care about balanced because my amplifiers only have balanced input connections. But never mind RCA will still enable over 100dB SNR and infinitesimal noise in domestic situations with short (<10m) cable runs.

My only wish list is for AirPlay 2 and maybe Roon Ready… when it’s ready.

ETA is 5 days; I can take photos under the hood if you guys like.

Your amplifier has a differential input connection....not a balanced connection.  Just for info, some amplifiers with XLR inputs don't have equal load resistances on the -/+ legs.  And some have no active circuitry on the "-" input at all.

And I've already directed you to a link that shows how to create a true, balanced interface from an unbalanced source.
