I have been using a DDRC-24 in my system, and I just purchased a Flex with Dirac Live. Using Dirac Live and crossing over to two subs with the DDRC-24 has been great. Replacing it with the Flex, with the Flex's preamp functionality, will help me simplify my system. I won't have time to install the Flex for a few days, so in the meantime I thought I'd ask a couple of questions.

Will I be able to load the Dirac Live projects I created while using the DDRC-24 into the DDRC plugin slots of the Flex, given that the DDRC-24 and the Flex use the same plugin? Or will I need to get the mic out and run analyses again to create new Dirac Live projects for the Flex?

Second, once I activate Dirac Live via the Flex, will I be able to go back and use the DDRC-24 as I have been, or would the change to the Flex be a one way street? I ask because I don't know how tightly Dirac Live and the specific miniDSP model are tethered…or whether I will be using the same copy of Dirac Live that I installed for the DDRC-24 for the Flex or if I will be reinstalling Dirac Live or installing another copy. This is a bit of an academic question because I don't have a strong need to go back and forth between my DDRC-24 and the Flex. Knowing the answer, however, could influence when I decide to swap the DDRC-24 for the Flex.

So far, I don't think I've seen miniDSP documentation that addresses the scenario of moving from one Dirac Live compatible miniDSP model to another (except for cautions that the Dirac Live license is not transferable, which is not my concern here).

Thank you!

I've tried transferring DL files between two units before but it's not possible. From memory I think it looked like the projects are linked to particular device serial numbers.

There will be no issue with Dirac Live licencing and the installed software.

I suggest you download the Flex manual and have a read but from memory I think it might be as trivial as a toggle in the plugin to enable/disable Dirac Functionality on the Flex.

Thanks, Ultrasonic. I found a window of time and dived in and installed the Flex. I discovered what you report—can't load DL project files that were created with a different miniDSP unit, even even if the units use the same plugin. Also, I did not have to download and install another copy of DL. (I did not know whether the DL software itself and the miniDSP unit were as tightly coupled as the DL project files and the miniDSP unit are; it turns out that is not the case.)

I don't this is covered in the manual, but I'll look some more. I haven't seen miniDSP documentation cover switching back and forth between two miniDSP units in the same system. The Flex manual does address switching between the 2x4 HD plugin and the DDRC-24 plugin, a different matter. I'll find out. This is a fairly trivial matter; I was just curious. Now that I've seen that the Flex opened the copy of the DL software I had been using with the DDRC-24 without any commotion whatsoever (and I'd forgotten that there is a device selector in the DL software), I don't think there would be any issue. Thanks.

Sorry that's what I was thinking of. Does this not achieve what you were asking about? I thought it enabled you to switch between the modes where you could use Dirac Live or use FIR filters...

No, I was curious about the very narrow case of being able to revert to my DDRC-24 temporarily in case I got hung up somewhere with the transition to the Flex. All due to my uncertainty about how Dirac Live would behave with the two units and what I perceived as limited time to play with making the transition while being eager to get going. All issues that I have now moved past! Just have to remember where I stowed my UMIK mic. Thanks for your support.
