So to future proof I want to get the balanced TRS version. is that possible where I could run unbalanced AVR to TRS inputs of the flex? Or is that not possible/have consequences?

I'd try the Rane and Hypex unbalanced->balanced cable configs (which don't tie balanced signal/shield together).
