Using PEQ on sub before or after running DIRAC? 2 years 2 months ago #54521

I’m using an SHD with a 2.1 setup (stereo speakers plus sub on outputs 1,2,3). Other than setting up the crossover points and delays, is there any merit in ‘smoothing’ out the sub response via the SHD PEQ filters *prior* to running DIRAC, or is it best to leave this all for DIRAC to sort out? And how about tweaking the PEQ filters *after* DIRAC calibration?

Just wondering how some of you more experienced guys use REW plus DIRAC and why.

Take a look at this thread as it goes on to talk about the merits or not of PEQ before/after Dirac: www.minidsp.com/forum/dirac-series-suppo...e-rew-ahead-of-dirac

Thanks! Both my SHD and sub allow PEQ to be set and then on top of that you can run a DIRAC calibration so I’m not entirely sure at what stage it’s best to use these and in what combination. And whether applying PEQ after Dirac can mess up some of the Dirac magic. I’m not technical/confident enough to conduct comparative tests using REW, so was wondering what others here would advise.

The question of which first, Dirac or PEQ is also discussed here: www.minidsp.com/forum/shd-series/18380-p...ore-dirac-live#52969

I think you have a secondary question too: if and when you apply PEQ, should you use the sub's PEQ or the SHD's. My guess is the sub's will be coarse and you might want to bypass it and just use the SHD's. But read those two other posts to decide whether its worth it!

Thank you, I will do. The last link is really interesting.

My sub’s PEQ is indeed fairly basic and only over 3 bands. I’ll be using the sub for home cinema as well (using a separate input and separate from the SHD) so might only use its PEQ for that purpose. I guess using the SHD along with Dirac means you can have a fair amount of flexibility in the set up.
