I have set up my pair of active monitors and an active sub using Dirac 3 on my DDRC-24 and it sounds fine but the bass just seems to weak. I know it measures well but in listening it just sounds thin.

I did use the Dirac house curve, I’d like to “boost” the bass some, but am scared to enter vertexes in the curve and start pushing things around. That seems too random and likely to produce something that might sound better to myself but unpleasant to everyone else.

Anyone have any advice on how to find and utilize house curves that might boost the bass a bit more but have evidence or at least good history of achieving satisfying results for a large number of people.

Just would like to boost the bass some, but do it in a somewhat systematic way rather than haphazardly moving things around as a novice. Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated. My sub is a sealed sub that unfortunately seems to roll off quickly below about 29 Hz but otherwise performs very nicely. My xover is at 80.

Internet search for harman Listener Target curves. I find that Harman's research on this subject closely reflects my own anecdotal findings in several years of demoing with Dirac Live.

I've taken some screen shots of a presentation we showed at hi-fi shows when I helped set up TacT Audio UK, some 15 years ago :S

It may give you some pointers as to voicing your target curve, although it doesn't mention the lower bass much.

Perhaps try tweaking the bass a bit in the parametric eq instead of changing your target curve. Give it a bit of a lift, have a listen and then move up the frequency range a little until you get the desired effect.

Hope that helps a bit.

You can always start with the Dirac Measurement you have like (Config 1) as it is ,.,,,,the start using the PEQ on each channel while playing music to get and idea of how you want to boost or cut certain frequencies....

Saw your post and figured I may be able to help a little. I was in the same position a while back and wound up finding a breakdown of the Harman Target Curve in dB's and manually transferred it into Dirac and tweaked it a little from there. Even the Harman Curve didn't have enough bass for my liking, but that was easily fixed. Between 160Hz and about 6KHz I follow the Harman Curve, and it sounds far more natural than I was able to do on my own, or with a straight downward slope that comes with Dirac. On either ends of the frequency spectrum, I find it's best to adjust in 0.2dB increments and listen each time until you find what sound you like. I'll attach a link to the pic that I used as the basis to make my own house curve. Hope this helps.

I have been used the curve NAD is making available on their site:

nadelectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/20...l_NADTargetCurve.txt

It looks much like the Harman Curve.

I've attached the Harman Curve if anyone is interested. It's worth having a listen to it. It has a few ups and downs throughout the frequency response that I never would've thought of trying out.

For amusement, I set up three "house curves" based on frequency response curves published for the Quad 2912 electrostatics, the ProAc Response 2.5 and the Event Opal. I'm not pretending that this turned my 3-way into a pair of Quads (etc) but it was nonetheless quite instructive - the Quad presentation was more laid back relative to my normal Harman curve, the ProAc rather more forward and "in your face", and I ended up changing the Event Opal curve quite dramatically at the bottom end because it just sounded thin and weedy.

How does one load these curves in the SHD/Dirac?

i will give you advice: google search for "tone generator" first hit should be the best one from szynalski.
in listening position move the frequency slider around or use the arrows to do sweeps. adjust frequency volume in your dsp until it sounds like everything has same volume. this is the true "flat" for your ears and all factors included, and also Fletcher–Munson curves are one of many sets of equal-loudness contours for the human ear and this is how you get there.

I am afraid  your advice does not answer my question.

You mention Fletcher-Munson so you must be aware that their work demonstrated that the  sensitivity of the human ear varies with sound pressure level.they found that:
  • At low listening volumes – mid range frequencies sound more prominent, while the low and high frequency ranges seem to fall into the background.
  • At high listening volumes – the lows and highs sound more prominent, while the mid range seems comparatively softer.
Yet in reality, the energy content of individual sounds remain the same, no matter what the listening volume.
In other words, if I set the compensation so that it my amplifier sounds linear at -40dB I will have to reset it if I listen at -30 dB. I believe that Dirac and the parametric equaliser in MiniDSP is intended to compensate for resonances in the room, not for the sound-pressure sensitivity of the human ear.

all the best

do a sweep a average listening level, it works. the Munson curve and so on just proves my point, but in the end you are the one that need to calibrate the sound that reaches your ears.
my point was that you cant use someone elses curve(theoretical or practical) or any curve, but do research and learn how things work.

you have to be able to hear a tone for it to be heard, if a frequency is played back on source your system had to play it at a volume that you can hear it. clearly anything other that that an you wont get hifi out of it. that is the basics, you have to try it first, use the tone generator, if something is missing then its missing, you got to get it back with dsp for example.

Hi.
Is there a way these values can be imported into Dirac Live?

Thank a lot

Dirac stores its target curves as text files with the extension ".targetcurve". If you save your current target curve in Dirac, and then use File Explorer in Windows and search for <name>.targetcurve you will find where they are stored and can see what the structure is. In my system they get stored in <username>/Dirac/Targets. You can edit the files (or create entirely new ones) using a text editor such as Notepad, and if you store them in the same subdirectory as the one you created earlier they will be visible to load in Dirac.

Great info @Tony_J
I'd much rather adjust the file than mess about with moving points with a mouse.

I have created my own .txt files and loaded them in the past but have also wanted to simply adjust the dirac default curve. Now I'll be able to find it!

Thanks
