Improved IR response worth the investment? 3 years 3 weeks ago #48327

I use a mindsp 2x4HD (and REW) to eq my dual subwoofers and am pleased with result.
What I was wondering is it worth upgrading the unit with Dirac live @ £200+ to (I assume) primarily improve the IR response over my current settings?
I suspect the answer is “maybe” depending on my subs/room but it’s a significant cost if the improvement is likely minimal
Has anyone experienced going this route?

Thanks

I went from a 2x4 HD to an SHD. Are you only using your 2x4 HD on the subwoofer signal or does your main speaker signal also pass through the miniDSP to enable you fully optimise the crossover region? From your post I'm guessing the former? If so note that there are issues with trying to use Dirac on limited bandwidth signals.

I have a 5.2 setup with Yamaha AVR not preamp so just eq the subs.
So not recommended/worthwhile for just subs then?

I wouldn't bother personally. Dirac is arguably easier to use but personally I'm not convinced that the impulse response of the sub signal makes an obvious audible difference. I do think my SHD sounds better than the 2x4 HD but this is higher up the frequency range (where I don't use Dirac). Note that the current version of Dirac won't help with setting the optimal time-delays for you subs, just adjusting the frequency response.

Others may have a different experience/opinon.

For info. my system consists of left and right main speakers plus a sub. For music I integrate the sub with the mains (2.0) and for movies I run a 2.1 setup with an OPPO blu-ray player providing the three signal channels.

Great feedback from @Ultrasonic already! Dirac live is really meant for full range + sub. Not sub only I'm afraid.. :-(
Maybe check MSO for some even better results?

Could anyone explain what the difference between Impulse Response is and having all your speakers time aligned? REQ does time alignment, right? I mean, I see that you can set delay with it.
